I am a HUGE fan of The Goblin Emperor, it's one of my favorite books, so when I saw Addison had a new book coming out that seemed to be original content, I was thrilled and pre-ordered it immediately. However, once I started reading it, it was IMMEDIATELY apparent that this is fanfic. Sherlock wing-fic fanfic. Sherlock Holmes is an angel and has wings, and solves some of his classic cases with his sidekick, Dr. Wa.....Doyle. Don't get me wrong, it's well written. There are some interesting ideas in here mixing the supernatural, mythic, and Jack the Ripper. But it boils down to this NOT being original fiction in my opinion, taking too much from the source material to really be innovative.
I could have dealt with the angels and wings, and even the conceit of a "consulting detective, the only one in the world!" if it had not been so close to the BBC show/blatantly fanfic. (Don't get me wrong, I love fanfic. But I don't pay $13 for it.) And the really infuriating part of it for me was the blurb, which doesn't mention Sherlock at all. If I had known beforehand that this was Sherlock fanfic, I would have gotten it from the library, not bought it. Learn from my mistakes. However, if you are really into wing-fic, you will probably love this.
