3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of time is spent on a teen level romance.

I found Ken Lozito through the "First Colony" series. I enjoyed that so I thought to give this earlier work a go. It's good but by no means great. This was an omnibus of the first three books of he series. The first book starts off as a sort of science mystery. The story is interesting but the characters are week and underdeveloped. There is some dimension, Lozito didn't make that mistake, just not much. It seems that a lot of time is spent on a teen level romance which wouldn't be too awful if the characters weren't in their thirties.

The second book in the series is were things came undone for me. There were two alien races introduced but they weren't very alien. They were just more undeveloped characters with green skin (or bark skin). I was so disappointed that I almost didn't read the third book in the omnibus.

The third book gets better. The characters start to develop, finally. The aliens are still not alien, but become more interesting. The story takes some interesting twists and leaves a nice set-up book four. I went from not wanting to read book three, to thinking about picking up the next installment. You can definitely see improvement in Lozito's style as the series progresses.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy rather than sci-fi.

Crichton’s “Andromeda Strain” was particularly gripping in part because Chrichton had experience with both bio research, academia, and government agencies. His ability to postulate just how government, academia, and military would react and perform was spot on: it was believable. It rang true. I do not know Lozito’s background outside his brief bio. But it is evident he has little to no experience dealing with the agencies and organizations he models his story around. Actions and reactions are utterly implausible. His depiction of the military and NASA mindset could have been garnered from Hollywood and other authors who likewise have no clue how these Institutions function. Falling back on cliches and two dimensional characters (at best) made it difficult to suspend disbelief and get into the story. The storyline held promise. Execution is poor.

It is a SF story of humans "taking on the universe". There are good and bad guys. There is adventure. It has a somewhat different premise that other SF stories. Note this is real SF not fantasy. It has abit of a love angle but not much which I think is good. Obviously the humans, who are way behind in technology, are extremely "lucky" in some aspects of the story including hacking alien computer networks. But that aspect is important to make the story interesting and does not mar the overall flow of the narrative.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very impressed, book description does not do it justice

I found this book because I was reading one of the authors other stories and decided to give this a try. I think I passed on this book when it first came out because the plot synopsis made it seem like every other scifi book on amazon. I have only read book 1, but this is a unique experience.

Book 1 is set in the near future and reads similar to Mars. Its about a manned mission in the Solar System using tech that is mostly realistic in the next 100 years. At the end of book one is when it gets interesting and the Aliens show up. How they show up is very mystical, and massively engaging.

So Pick up this book, you will be impressed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice story, enjoyed a lot.

This is a nice first contact tale. The concept of a couple cycles of galactic occupation is not new, but the author adds a couple twists that were new to me. The characters are fairly predictable in their actions, but the events they are in are different enough that the story overcomes this very minor issue easily. Would say this is worth reading.

The three books were excellent. Great character development, , interaction, action sequences, everything. The killer, for me, was finding out each successive book was $4.99 .As much as I read, I simply can"t afford that. Alas, I'll have to move on.

What a great series! I can only hope that our first contact will go this well. This series is full of adventure and mankind's ability to overcome any adversity and still show compassion and camaraderie. Way to go Mr. Lozito!

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Triple Episode in Space

This series of 3 Ascension Series Books is a must have for lovers of Space Opera; Space Thrillers or even Science Fiction. The story linesare expertly told in an easy to read well editedway. The books have been professionally craftedwith fine eye for detail and a viable and credible plot with exceptional characterizations. The alien cultures and races are described in detail as are their motivations and key drvers, so often left out by lesser talented authors. This meticulous attention to the cultural interactions of the species involved sets this series well apart from most other authors. I have now read all five episodes of this slalom through space and culture. Keep up the good work!!!!

Shades of pre Star Trek about it....i.e. before warp drive....aliens (Good and bad), stalwart, enterprising female captain, loyal crew (And a bad hunan apple in the barrel to screw things up). Enjoyed the read and will get the next in the series.

Loving it. What a fantastic imagination to write this. It seems so real, I just fall into this universe when I'm reading. Good characters and plot line that just keeps developing. Well done.
