5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story, great characters

Great seamless flow from the first book to this one. Again, the author does not disappoint and provides a story that is logical, believable, and gets you involved with the characters.Between the Eden Chronicles and this Seasons of Man series this is the sixth book I've read by S. M. Anderson and have totally enjoyed each one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story that keeps moving...

I loved the fast-paced 1st book, so I was hoping the 2nd would be just as good... and it is. I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm already sucked into the story. My only con for the series so far would be the editing. Lots of typos, especially in the first book. It's also hard for me to determine which character is talking sometimes. Overall though, I highly recommend these books to anyone who loves a good post-apocalyptic story.

Great read. Spoiler alert.

This one starts with the Marines in the Hole. The Hole is a giant bunker full of weapons, ammo, military vehicles and tanks. The Marines have been there since the die off. Gunnery Sgt. Bruce is in command since the LT who was in command killed himself. Months under ground is hard to take. The LT isn't the only one. They all want out. GS Bruce has the codes to get out but he knows he has to wait for those coming. They also have the codes. Bruce hopes they get to the hole soon.

At the Hotel Daniel and Michelle watching Pro on the tractor. They have planted in all the fields they have. Both are pleased. The folks from the Hotel are doing well but all are worried about Jason. A Jason who is gone on patrol. Rebecca is wondering if he will come back.

Jason has traveled North and is of two minds about going back to the hotel. Rebecca wants a life with him and he feels he is betraying his dearly loved wife who didn't survive the plague. She was pregnant with their first child and he buried them in his back yard. He then went to a friends house. That friend was a big time prepper and both he and his wife didn't survive. The house had solar panels for electricity and was stocked to the rafters with food, ammo and weapons. Its the place Jason decided would be his base.

Right now Jason has spotted TT units and follows them. They attack a small town, round up all survivors that survive. Jason notes these guys and gals really wanted to capture, not kill then survivors. He follows and winds up and college campus. The the buildings have lights and there are hundreds of people there. Jason knows these folks aren't far from the Hotel and he knows the Hotel is undefendable. He heads back to let the others know what he has found.

Colonel Skirjanek and his people, including the Russians, have made it back to the US on the USS Boise a nuclear sub. A sub that the Captain sank after they all hit the shore. Now the Colonel needs to get to the hole.

So begins one damned fine read.

This one has Jason, Rebecca, Pro, Daniel, Michelle, Lisa Potter the leader of the college crew, General Marks who heads the military end of the place, Pavel the Russian Spetsnaz officer who is the Colonels right hand, GS Bruce and his marines, an attempt by Skirjanek to contact those at the college that ends in death, Ray a man traveling with a group that ends up at the hotel, a Michelle who doesn't trust any of that group, Carla and older woman who seems to be the leader, a woman who is more that she appears to be and Jason Larson the ex Army Ranger who will do his best to help the Colonel, protect those dearest to him, survive and stay alive.

Five Stars. Great read. Waiting for number three.

This second installment in the seasons of man series is just as exciting and heartbreaking as the first. Scott Anderson delivers a great story with characters who make decisions most of us hopefully never have to, but with whom we can understand and empathize. It was a treat reading this book. On to book 3!

I grew up reading some phenomenal books and that has continued through now to “End of Summer” and now “Reap what you Sow” and the Eden series. Big fan of a few fairly diverse genre’s and thrilled I took a chance on the Eden Chronicles first and was disappointed when I finished the ones out so far…..that stopped within the first 10 minutes of starting this series. Character depth, development and most importantly believable! Take a chance, I did and now off to read “Standing at the Gate.”

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing sequel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 12, 2022

I really enjoyed the first book, but this second one in the series was disappointing. It was written from the perspective of too many different characters, it wasn’t clear which character was “talking”, and it was heavy on the artillery talk. I understand that people want accurate military details, but it seemed excessive in this book. In fact the details of the weapons was greater than the details of the characters. It also became more stereotypical and “manly” than the first. I thought the political undercurrent (not particularly under, blazing over the top) was distracting too. And please, the use of words like “woke” (speech marks or not) belong in the comments section of the Daily Mail, not a novel.

As an author, Scott Anderson is heading up towards the top of my list of favourites to join John Birmingham. The Seasons of Man series is a great story with well developed characters - SM Anderson tells us just enough about their background and then their current situation and thoughts to give us the context of their actions and keeps the story moving along. I don't know about other readers but the details about weapons and tactics woven into the story is very relevant to that story and, to me, integral to enjoyment of the books. I am keenly anticipating book 3 in this series.
