5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fun Romp

So, I'm totally caught up on Dante and Blays' adventures, so I decided to pick up what is essentially a prequel. This is a new series featuring Cally, Dante's mentor, where we learn about his origins, how he developed his powers, and what provoked his choice to... well, I don't want to give too much away. The banter isn't as hard and fast as you'd expect from Dante and Blays, but the dialogue is still good, especially once Cally matures and starts to come into his own. His dour companion, was a nice twist. Again, I don't want to give too much away, but people who seem like bad guys sometimes have a good reason for their bad attitudes, and in the end aren't as bad as initially presented.

My one gripe is that there is a character that I felt Cally should mourn after a certain incident, but he seemed to completely forget about them.

I'm definitely ready and waiting for the sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice plot, easy to read.

A good read, I could hardly put it down.

A fairly simple story with adventure and magic, not a lot of thinking required to enjoy the plot.

A naive young healer and an older wiser soldier end up saving Narashtovik. A nice amount of time is spent with the norren who are their usual exasperating selves.

Despite being book 1 in a series, the book end nicely and is not a cliffhanger. The story of Cally will continue with the next chapter in his life, I expect.

I really liked Cally when he was introduced in The Cycle of Arawn, and was happy to see that he now has his own series to follow. It's fun reading about young Cally after knowing a bit about his life already and what he will become.

This was a great start to the series, and didn't end in a cliffhanger, just the start of a new adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Addicting adventure

Guaranteed quality by Robertson. I had hard time starting this as I usually don’t like prequels. Or so I always think. The pace and narration is very similar to the rest of the Arawn series and it has you addicted immediately from the beginning. The only minus comes from the fact that Cally feels as exactly the same character as Dante...

I love prequels and this one is a gem. Very glad to finally learn of Cally’s beginning.
As always, the character development and story telling is superb! Ed is a true artist of the page.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected to. Young Cally is so much like Galand. Looking forward to the next book in this cycle.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as the Cycles of Arawn and Galand

This is great! Just what I needed to read while waiting for the next episode in the Cycle of Galand to come out! It's thoroughly enjoyable discovering Cally's youth, and the stupid things he did before getting all wise and good at stuff in the later Cycles! I'm really looking forward to the next instalments in the series. Just wish they were ready to read now! I am impatient and want to binge read them all!

This first book documenting Callimandicus's journey is very much in the dynamic duo theme of his earlier books set later Cycle of Galand. Well worth a read. If you have read the Cycle of Galand it will make you smile to hear the familiar names, if you haven't then go read them. Or listen to the amazing audiobooks.

Nearly finished and I have trouble putting it down, the story works beautifully as the prequel for the time before Dante and Blaze and if you are a fan of the Cycle of Galand then you should love this!
