This book is A Touch of Darkness from Hades’s POV. While in some ways it is a retelling, it most definitely didn’t feel like I was re-reading the same book!
Reading Hades’s perspective puts you into the mindset of the ancient god who has gone through so much, and it’s heartbreaking. The god of the dead has been alone, unloved, and feared his entire existence, and now the fates have sent him the woman meant to be his queen. Even though they sent him Persephone, the fates are not always kind, and they can unravel his future with her on a whim. His fear of Persephone being taken from him, not being able to handle his past, and his darkness, is so strong that he tries to control the things around them to make her understand why he is the way he is. With him being alone for so long and lacking communication skills, he begins to understand that maybe his normal way of dealing with things is not going to work with this goddess. Despite getting advice from friends and changing his ways, one thing that never changes is he will still fight for her and protect her by any means necessary because Persephone is his queen and no one touches her...but him. As his love for her grows and she returns his feelings, he starts to think maybe the fates will finally allow him to be happy...or will they?
I loved getting to see Hades interact with Hecate and Hermes more (they are my favorites!) and all the behind the scenes things that we had NO idea that were going on in ATOD. I thought it was really well told by Scarlett. I loved Hades immediate reaction to her, his need for her. This story was just so rich and full of detail that you wouldn’t know it was a POV of another book. It stands on its own as an amazing story! If you can’t tell I’m in love with this book and obsessed with this series! Give it a read! You won’t regret it!
