3.0 out of 5 stars Shallow overview

This book gives a decent overview of the authors concept of Emotional Intelligence (and promotes their EQ-i 2.0 EQ test thoroughly). However, the overview is shallow and the stories are as well - often corny, not believable or too basic to make it interesting.

Some of the book's statements are backed by research, but the research part of it only goes so far - would've liked to see a more complete discussion or the EQ concept, which still feels like a not well defined idea.

Gives a lot of good information on Emotional Intelligence. It gives you a brief history and explains some of the research that explains why developing your EI skills is important for your success in work and in like. The book breaks down 15 skills and goes through each one and provides questions for readers to write about. I would highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Developmental opportunity

This book is a great book for making what seems to be an intangible concept into a tangible one. The authors do so by defining the 15 skills used to assess and develop Emotional Intelligence (EI).

I especially liked the way the authors use examples of successful skill use, which brings them to life. Moreover, if the reader wants to develop their own EI, the authors have added exercises and self-assessments at the end of each chapter.

Unfortunately, there is still much stigma around EI and that is why this book is one of the best on this subject. It offers skills that can be developed, which takes the fear of emotions out of the equation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explains emotional intelligence really clearly

The EQ Edge is a very informative book about emotional intelligence. Written by Dr Steven Stein, the highly-regarded expert on emotional intelligence (EI), this book includes a general discussion on the definition of EI, followed by a series of stories and anecdotes bringing the subject to life. The style is relaxed and friendly and the book never becomes too academic or boring. There is a separate chapter on each of 15 EI sub-scales such as 'Emotional Self-awareness' or 'Empathy' which are really useful to really understand the depth of EI and how it can be developed. I use this book as an extra resource in delivering emotional intelligence workshops to help people in organisations to learn how to develop self-awareness and how to express emotions effectively in the workplace to improve inter-personal communication and to reduce stress. Highly recommended.
