After reading "Shore Leave" and "Storming the Norse Wind" I expected big things from this story. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed. I'll admit that some of "Masquerade" was just as good as the others, but most of it was either too silly and unbelievable or just too boring.
For one thing, this story had WAY too much about fashion and how gorgeous and perfect Tanis was. There was also too much of people/spies shape-shifting to look like other people, but what did me in was Tanis changing into a squid. And not just any squid, but a beautiful and highly talented squid!
In the first two books it was clear that Tanis was good looking but the author didn't beat you over the head with it. This one takes it through the roof with Tanis being a fantastic dancer and an expert singer as well as being outrageously beautiful. The long intelligent conversations with the dolphins and orcas was over the top, too. I do believe they're intelligent creatures but I don't see them speaking and thinking just like humans.
I was originally planning to buy Book 3 of this series but after reading "Masquerade" I think I'll stop here. Too bad, cause I really did like those first two books.
