Fiona Lachllan, out of desperation, agreed to put a potion in Lord Belkin's drink at a predetermined location. But when Fiona arrived at the appointed destination, she was met by Dominic Lynsted, Duke of Holburn, the man she had dreamed of for a whole year. His face was the one that gave her hope as she found herself on her own after her parents' death. She cherished the memory of seeing Dominic at a ball. But he did not remember her. Dominic had come to meet a Spanish Ex-Patriot who had betrayed him more than a decade ago. While both Dominic and Fiona were trying to grasp this unexpected turn of events, three gunmen broke in on them. And there begins an adventure and mystery that throws Dominic and Fiona together fighting for their life.

Cathy Maxwell has created a perfect romantic mystery, full of adventure, humor, love and action. The characters are mature, worthy and loveable. Wow! What a fun read. Be warned, however, you will want to read this straight through. :-)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Seduction at Christmas

Great Story!

I wouldn't necessary call a seduction at Christmas though. I truly enjoyed this story. The author draws the reader in. I felt the action as Fiona and Nick tried escaping the Irish henchmen. You have people being murdered and uncles stealing his ring. He has being after Andres for sometime for a ring he stole although he did steal it, it was behalf of his uncles. 'Beware innocence' she had me going I was sure it was the little old aunt but I surprise and who it turned out to be. I would have like to feel the pain Fiona must have felt but I did not. I have a habit of reading sequels out of order. T read "His Christmas Pleasure" first and enjoyed it but now I understand the connection between the Duke and Andres. What I don't know is what happen between Gilliam and Andres; I will have to see what other books she has written maybe I discover the answer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yummy hero but... 3.5 rating

After the ending of the last book, in which this book's heroine was introduced, many complained of the not so typical, yet more realistic ending. Because of that I had hoped that Ms Maxwell would give this heroine a complex hero with a comparable conflict and she didn't disappoint. This hero is yummy and deserving of Fiona's love. The sexual tension was wonderfully delicious but it fell a bit short in one element. The consumation was bit too cliche and anti climactic for me . For those who read the preivious book, they know Fiona was brutally raped because of the actions of her brother, however in this one, Ms Maxwell didn't develop Finoa's fear of intimacy very realistically. As yummy as this hero is, Fiona was too willing to accept his intimacy after only a small minor hesitation, this seems to negate her character development in the last book, To me if one had been raped by a group of soldiers her fear of intimacy should have been a stronger conflict even with this understanding hero, but Maxwell seemed to gleen over it only in passing.

Though not her best book in this series it should be read by those who like the period but aren't caught up in the typical setting and romance of this period. She provides the reader with an interesting plot, and a hero/heroine who the reader will care about until the final page is turned. This one reads like a "love story" not just the typical romance of the period. Ms Maxwell's writing is clear and unclutterd despite the need for a stronger developement of imtimacy conflict given Fiona's past. Though this might have been at the behest of her editor, as this seems to be a growing trend in romance, a dumbing down of any conflicts raped heroines have. To fully enjoy this book, I would suggest one should read the preivious book...IN THE HIGHLANDER'S BED to fully understand the character of this heroine.

I expected I wouldn't like this story based on the reviews I read and boy was I wrong. I hate it when a romance novel just says the h/h fell in love without the love ever growing. It leaves me thinking they can't be in love because they've only been in the other's presence for a few hours. There was a mention of love early on in this book and I felt myself cringe, but the romance developed and you felt the characters fall in love. The heroine had faced enormous tragedy and carried with her a burden that could place a huge barrier to a loving relationship. The hero comes into her life carrying burdens of his own, but he trusts her to help him through and that faith in her builds her trust in him as well.

It's interesting how two people can read the exact same thing and have different opinions. I finished the book and the first thought that came to my mind was that it was loving and intimate without being saccharin sweet. Then I got on here to write my review and read where someone else called it just that. I hate books that are that way, especailly when the characters don't know one another, but these characters did. I thought it was an enjoyable and entertaining read and I'm so glad I didn't skip it because it's definitely a worthwhile read...very loving and emotionally intimate. And now I can't wait to read Gillian's story!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved the sequel

It was a nice book to conclude the sequel. It was pretty evident that the heroine in our story wouldn't take the easy way to survive but the "road less traveled" which eventually lead her to true love. It was hard to put the book down. Thanks!

4.0 out of 5 stars Adventure filled romance

Down on her luck and desperate to earn some money, Fiona Lachlan finds herself agreeing to help with a plan that ends with her luring the notorious Duke of Holburn, Nick Lynsted, into trouble. When the plan goes terribly wrong, Fiona and Nick soon find themselves on the run from a murderous gang of men.

In order to protect themselves and stay alive, Fiona finds herself posing as Nick's ward. But with a missing family ring, old friends turned enemies, a disapproving family and someone intent on murder - there is little time for anything else. Except maybe seduction.

Despite being a book that easily stands alone, this book features Fiona Lachlan, the sister of the hero from Maxwell's previous book,
In the Highlander's Bed .

From the start, the book was filled with excitement, action, adventure and lust. Fiona is a flawed but feisty character whose character suits the slightly intense yet rougishly loveable Nick. The pair have good chemistry and a love you can believe in, even if their own romance sometimes seemed to take a back seat to the action/mystery.

Overall, this book was an interesting read that definitely kept you turning the pages. I felt that it wasn't as strong emotionally as many of Cathy Maxwell's previous novels yet it was still an enjoyable read and one I would recommend. 4 stars.
