4.0 out of 5 stars It's a bit short, but ok

I've really enjoyed this authors books. Music and the Mirror is high on my list of amazing books, so had to try the new book! It's not bad, I think the issue for me was it was a bit short, so I didn't see the tension as much. I love a good ice queen, but the story was too short for the development. It's not bad though, I enjoyed the story, and will keep an eye out for more books by this author, for sure.

Lady Karlson was entertaining. Tess was pretty much your routine ice queen breaker, except the Karlson wasn't an ice queen. That she's not I.Q. is obvious from the beginning, so the tension between the two was lame. Too much made of Tess is always going to be herself - it became a little tiresome.
The legal battle over the estate between Karlson and an in law was engaging.
I wish there was more showing of what Lady Karlson saw in Tess, I missed it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Characters
Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2020
Before I start reading any book, I think about the title and its meaning. As I was reading this story, I didn’t think there was much of a connection between the title, storyline, and its characters, especially with the sophisticated and regal Lady Susannah Karlson. Tess Robinson was the down to earth veterinarian who returned to her hometown after a messy professional and personal breakup.
When Tess first met Susannah, she was taken aback by Susannah’s brusque and haughty manner, but she didn’t back down. As the story developed so did the characters and this roll in the hay became evident and more than the term implied. This course of action also became a critical turning point.

I enjoyed the strong and powerful personalities of these characters. The author also did a great job in showing their contrasting life style. On the surface level, Susannah seemed to be the one that had her life together, but it was far from her reality. Susannah was dealing with the care of her estate after her- in name only-husband died and a sister-in-law who wanted to take it from her. She had tension filled days and only found tranquility when visiting her beloved horses.
Tess embraced her new partnership with her best friend and husband with confidence and purpose. Both women were determined to succeed in their endeavors, even though obstacles, especially for Susannah, set them back. It was nice to see their once combative relationship turn around with well written dialogue.

I read a few other books by this author. She continues to engage her reader with interesting storylines and characters to match. It was an entertaining read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Enemies to Lovers Romance
Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2020
Lola Keeley is an exceptional romance writer. She made a grand entrance on the lesfic scene with her debut novel The Music and the Mirror and she has yet to take her foot off the gas. She is a wonderful storyteller that knows how to create intriguing and compelling characters. She leans into the ice queen theme brilliantly and plays up the enemies to lovers with the best of them. She is a solid writer with an impressive resume. Her new novel A Roll in the Hay is everything readers have come to expect from her.

I was easily drawn into this story, as Keeley knows how to spike your interest in the first pages. She pairs two interesting and powerful leads, each with compelling backstories. Tess is a charming character and easily relatable. Her first run-in with Susannah leaves us wanting more. Sparks fly as they square off and we know immediately that their romance is going to be nothing less than spirited and passionate. As the tension between them builds, so does their attraction. When they are finally unable to resist or deny their seductive magnetism, their fiery chemistry is unstoppable.

If you savor tales with defrosting ice queens and charming women in small towns, then this enemies to lovers romance is perfect for you. It is well written and entertaining. It’s the perfect book to throw in your bag for lounging at the beach or poolside. A Roll in the Hay is a solid romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read.

Lady Karlson, Susannah, had a deal with her late husband, namely having a marriage in name only. While they were able to lead their own lives, pursuing lovers that knew enough to keep quiet about their relationships with the Karlsons. But that didn’t take from the fact that her and Jimmy were best friends. Both loved animals and planned on turning the Karlson estate into an animal refuge. Now her biggest challenge was coming from her sister-in-law, Robin. It also didn’t help that she was actively seeking a veterinarian service to look after the horse’s she’d rescued. She had her hands full.
Tess Robinson was moving from her life in London, leaving her vet practice for her ex-girlfriend to run as she pleased. Did I mention Kim was also the GF who cheated on her. Luckily her good friend, Margo and her husband, Adam, had a veterinarian practice in Scotland’s countryside. They were looking forward to building their practice by being chosen to look after Lady Karlson’s horses. That was the plan but that was also before Susannah and Tess met. It wasn’t a meeting that went all that well.
Lola Keeley has quickly become one of those author’s that I would consider a favorite writer. With ‘A Roll in the Hay’ she keeps that place. Nicely paced, believable dialogue makes this a very, very nice read.

A lovely slip from two women snarking st one another into a slow burn and cute flirtation. The prim Susannah against the down to earth and gruff Tess.

My single complaint is that it wasnt longer as it was a charming story! It could easily have gone on a bit more with some stretching of scenese and ekeing out their tension a tad more. But im being greedy because it was a joy to read!

I would say this is more like a three and a half star story. Although quite charming and likeable characters, who bounced off each other, I found the story a tad unbelievable and the pacing a little off. Under done in some places and over the top in others.

Over all I liked the chemistry between Vet, Tess and Lady of the manor, Susannah. A nice read for the holidays. I certainly enjoyed it.
