4.0 out of 5 stars Very cute read with a cinnamon roll hero

I enjoy many of Ann Aguirre's works and this book was so cute! I loved the idea of a techno witch and how each woman had her own brand of talents in different "fields" of magic. The small town setting was adorable and both characters felt alive and vivid. The hero, Titus, especially really came to life and I sympathized so much with him (fellow perpetually single compatriot over here!). The dialogue was quick and snappy, cheesy where it needed to be (the MCs have very cheesy senses of humor), and I gobbled this book up!
There were a few things that took a star off for me, though. By the middle of the book, I really wanted to smack Danica, our heroine, upside the head. She goes on and on about how she sees her mother as weak compared to her domineering grandmother, but then is a doormat to everyone else's wants except her own. In doing so she hurts herself and the hero. I felt so so bad for the hero, probably because I saw a lot of myself in him, and thought he deserved to be even more frustrated that he was. Danica was wishy washy for quite a while, thinking they couldn't be together and knowing the hero wanted more but still finding excuses to pursue seeing him but also holding back. It wasn't fair. Granted, this is a pretty realistic way to show that love is messy and unfair sometimes, but yeah, the middle was a bit hard to get through when the truth of things are so obvious and Danica seems to be oblivious to it for the sake of the plot. When she casts a spell to show her the right path, it ends up bringing Titus to her door, and she thinks the spell went wrong. The book also never corrects her, when it's pretty obvious to the reader that it went perfectly right. I also didn't understand how Danica waited so long to talk to her mother and have the truth laid out for her. I felt like her reasoning was a bit thin and more plot-driven.
I also would have loved to delve a bit deeper into this magical world; we see a few bits of magic but I was interested in how this magic "worked." I was a bit bummed that witches are underground and seriously can't tell anyone, even spouses, that they're witches. But the small town setting made up for it!
Overall this was a great read, extremely strong writing, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre! Just give yourself time to power through so you don't have to go the bed in the middle and worry about these two ;)

Witch Please by Ann Aguirre
Paranormal romance / romantic comedy.
Danica is a witch that can fix machines with her powers. She knows her Grandmother will not allow Danica to have a relationship with a mundane but Titus is irresistibly charming. They make literal sparks with a simple hand touch. Danica appeals to a higher power to give her strength to walk away from Titus and for him to not to be heartbroken. But the two are drawn to each other as if by magic.

I loved the banter and charm of this book. Titus is adorable and his history of heartbreak makes you want to help him find his true love. I hated the manipulation of the Grandmother and won’t share any spoilers but am happy with the resolution.
Titus says he is bisexual and tells Danica about a past crush with a boy but he is also a virgin so that side of the story feels a little incomplete. The sex scenes between Danica and Titus are steamy and satisfying and also a bit on the light and humorous side.
The neighbor cat repeatedly visiting and allergic reaction were delightful.
My only complaint was the rather abrupt ending. Happy for now with the intention of forever.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook which was narrated by Ava Lucas. The narrator did a good job with voice variations and expressions of emotion. Speed of 1.0 felt like it was dragging and much slower than regular conversation so I listened mostly at 1.25 which is about the norm for me. There was a distinct male / female difference in the performance which helped visualize the characters as the story progressed.

Excerpt:
“She leaned forward over the counter, proping her chin on her hands. “How interesting. Would you care to tell me why?”
“Would you care to tell me your name?” He suspected it was too soon to declare he had decided to marry her and was already christening their babies in his brain. Two at least. No more than five. He had to act fast before his curse kicked in.”
Excerpt from Witch Please by Ann Acquire

I received a copy of the audiobook from NetGalley, Sourcebooks and Dreamscape Media. I also purchased a copy to share with my romance loving friends.

Witch Please has been on my spooky season TBR for a while now, so I was really excited to finally get to it. This was a great book for someone who is looking for a light hearted witchy book. I really enjoyed this book, there is some world building, but nothing overly complicated. It was easy to follow, and I loved the coven disguised as a book club. I really liked the storyline, side characters, and the small town setting. I liked both Danica and Titus individually, and I thought they had a cute relationship. I love that Titus was the unexperienced one in this relationship. With that said I will say that when I went into this book I thought it was going to be Hallmark level cute so I was quite surprised when the steam came in. It flowed well, but again I was not expecting it at all. As far as the premise I did enjoy it but another thing I didn't expect was for the end to be left so open. Yes there was a HFN, but there was a witch hunter storyline that I thought it would be resolved in this book. I will say that I have since read the next book in the series and it is resolved in that. This was a fun and funny (sometimes serious) start to this series.

While well written, cozy is not my personal choice. I love Ann's other adult series, Ars Numina being 1 of my favourite series of all time and loved the fairy tales. Will skip the rest of the Witch series. Personal opinion only.
