1.0 out of 5 starsHorrendously edited and too boring to finish

This is hands down the worst edited book I have ever read. It is not a slip up here and there, it's constant throughout the book and is so bad as to make you struggle to understand the word they were trying to use - like "not" versus "hot". They mess up "he" and "she" many times, making some some sentences completely incomprehensible until you realize the mistake. Aside from the errors breaking into the flow of the story (super annoying but not something I would generally complain about) the story is just plain boring. There are some laughs at the retirement community but the fake relationship angle was unnecessary and she's banking a lot on us believing Seb remembers Holly so fondly from childhood that we overlook what a whiny unlikeable brat she is now. To top that off I'm 70% through the book and not even a kiss between the two. No heat, no sexual tension, no romance of any kind. Just two people who you know will end up together but I don't care enough about how to read the ending.
What’s included is good. The back and forth between them is sassy and a bit funny, but.... By the time what was fake starts feeling real the books almost over and when it does become real & official wham bam this book is put to bed. It seemed unfinished and the ending felt forced and anticlimactic after all that. I guess I expected and hoped for more.
I absolutely loved this book. I got it read in two days and if it wasn't for having things to do during the day I would have read it in one. I loved Holley and Sebastian's story. I laughed so hard throughout the entire book. Their chemistry and banter were both hot and comical. This book was well written and unique. The Author did an amazing job with this story and I can't wait to read the next installment to this series!
High school misunderstanding - check Mean girl (who gets a whole backstory but is never heard from again) - check Professional athlete - check 'Nerd' who is not in any definition a nerd - check Wacky grandparents that do nothing but add needed pages - check Meddling parents - check Fake relationship - check Wacky best friends - check Lips quirking every fifth page - check Thou both protest too much defense of romance novels - we're already reading it, so why are you yelling at us? - check Overuse of nicknames - Holl, Seb, Say - check Chapter after chapter of fighting to fill pages - check Constant middle fingers - check
Holley is possibly the least likeable character I have ever read. It would only make sense that Sebastian pursued her that hard if a witch told him he'd get his pitching arm back if he convinced her to love him. Them falling in love was so unbelievable. I only skimmed to the end bc I paid for the book. I have read other Emma Hart books that were much better that I'm shocked at how bad this was.
Ok, I blew through this book faster than #bookwormsguidetodating. I can not wait for book 3. This book was so good! I love Seb and Holley, high school best friends turned enemies turned lovers. Holley is my spirit animal; she is feisty and fierce and if you mess with her books, she will cut you. She reads murder mysteries; she knows how to hide the body. I thought I laughed a lot in book one but this one was so much better. Yes, the romance in this one was much slower, but the tension, boy it was there. I absolutely loved this one and I need more of Holley and Seb.
Holley is a bookworm, Seb is a baseball player the two unlikely friends formed a friendship and were best friends throughout high school until Seb messed it up by kissing Holley’s bully at prom. 8 years and a grudge later Seb is back in town to recover from a possible career-ending injury. Holley is trying to do anything and everything she can to avoid him. Until he tricks her into being his date to his sister’s wedding. Holley goes, only to have his mother tell everyone they are dating. She hates him with a passion and nothing his mother does will change that. But what happens when she finds out the reason that the loss they’re friendship was a huge misunderstanding. Will they call it out as the past is in the past or re-kindle their friendship and fall in love?

Loved The Bookworm's Guide to Dating. This one? Not so much. Holley was the worst! So annoying, so teen-aged immature and angsty, that I almost DNF'ed this book. Controlling, she wants everything but is unwilling to even listen, let alone compromise. Distrustful, judgmental, etc. I kept wondering why someone as nice as Seb even gave her the time of day, tbh. However, I hate to DNF books and I loved Sebastian and the rest of their friend group, so I finished it. I'm looking forward to The Bookworm's Guide to Flirting, because Saylor is hilarious and I have a weakness for men with British accents. Fingers crossed.
The Bookworm's Guide to Faking It is a cute read. If you love miscommunications, misunderstandings then you'll love this one. Holley and Sebastian are amazing together. Holley is an organization freak, sweet and holds a grudge. Sebastian is back in town and trying to make amends. Their banter will make you giggle. Of course you can't forget their grandparents are always a hoot. I love how Sebastian slowly breaks down Holley's walls. I loved this one and can't wait for more to come in the Bookworm's Guide series.
I couldn't finish it. I tried, I really did. Made it to 85%. The idea was good but...ugh I found it frustrating. The dialogue between Holley and Sebastian was just didn't go anywhere. She kept bringing up the same excuse over and over and over which its a short book, that's not necessary. I found side characters more interesting except Saylor. There was nothing to like about Saylor. There was a few witty lines I enjoyed but it just was immature writing. Missed alot of character development or backstory. I may check in on this author in a few years, see if things have changed.

I loved the first book in this series and, if anything, I love The Bookworm’s Guide to Faking It even more. I honestly think that a prerequisite of living in White Peak is to be slightly eccentric if I’m being polite or in the case of the residents in the retirement home to be completely nuts. Their escapades have me laughing out loud but someone really needs to call the RSPCB or whatever the US equivalent is to mount a rescue attempt on those poor ducks. I can just picture the scene now with the senior citizens fending them off with their walking sticks.
The main story features a semi-second chance/friends to lovers romance. I say “semi” because our hero and heroine, Sebastian and Holley, crashed and burned before their secret mutual love had a chance to even get off the ground. Holley is a slightly judgemental, control freak who holds a mean grudge whereas Sebastian is a genuinely nice guy with the patience of saint who, despite still missing his best friend, knows exactly which of Holley’s buttons to push to get a reaction which he does frequently. I have to confess once I found out the back story to their teenage drama I did find myself siding with Sebastian.
Even with the help of the rest of their gang of friends, it takes a while but Holley and Sebastian eventually find their happily ever after but it’s an enjoyable ride watching them get there, bickering every step of the way. One of the things I enjoy most though about this series is just because they declare their love, they don’t suddenly start moving at top speed, moving in, marrying etc. They just enjoy the moment. Now I can’t wait to see what happens as Saylor falls for an English accent albeit one that comes with a hot personal trainer in the next book coming soon.

Reuniting years after their friendship ended without any from a closure Holley and Sebastian reunite and their chemistry is everything! They’ve got this easy nature with each other that brings out a playful side and made this book such a joy to read.
Once again Holley’s bookworm ways are so easy to identify with and give you a much greater appreciation for the characters. Holley’s comments about having a severe lack of respect for sleep due to reading is one of my favourite moments of the book and I wish I had someone like Sebastian who would recommend leaving a social situation so I could go back to my room, get comfy and read.
The relationship dynamics from the secondary characters and their appearances draw you into this world that Emma has created. The grandparents and those ducks add so much humour. Would highly recommend this series and look forward to Saylor’s story.

If you are after a second chance slow burner romance, this is the book for you. The witty and sassy protagonist is definitely what you need during lockdown. Emma doesn’t let you down sigh another Ron com you won’t be able to put down.
