This book is what dark fairytales are made of!! OMG and with a massive dash of hot steamy sex…. Equals a book you can’t put down!! As always, Jennifer has an amazing ability to create strong heroines, something I absolutely ADORE about her books. As a woman, I can’t help but LOVE strong female characters which make them so easy to develop an emotional attachment to…. And once I’m invested in a book emotionally, it becomes a masterpiece in my mind. Phee’s character in this book is by far one of my favorite that Jennifer has created because she’s so relatable. It’s so easy to empathize and relate to her feelings, which of course, makes the book all that more intense! The other thing I loved about this book is that it had dystopian feel to it. I’m a sucker for books that take place in dystopian societies, so pair that with the dark Cinderella feeling twisted story, and beyond hot and steamy sex… makes this the perfect book to snuggle up with. Just don’t start reading it late at night… you might find yourself late to wake the next morning because you couldn’t put it down the night before.
This story takes place in a world that is pretty similar to our world technology wise, but the city in which Phee and Bryant live is divided by fog. A chance to see the sky is only for the rich.
Phee is a wonderful character. She hasn’t had it easy in life, but she is determent to make each day count and doesn't give up. . She is strong and loyal to the people she loves. She is not perfect, but who is and that makes her more realistic.
And the saying ' don't judge a book by its cover`, is the perfect way to describe Bryant.
Without giving to much of the story sway. What I loved about this story is that is also shows what happens after the fact. A lot of books end at that point, but not this one. Not everything is always peachy afterwards. There is a lot to be done and hard choices to be made. What I also loved id the way the writing style and the voice of the book changes throughout the book. it runs parallel with what the characters experience.
And if you have read Jennifer Bene’s books before, you know there are also a few very hot scenes and a few darker ones, where you will find yourself turning page after page to find out what happens next.
One thing you will always encounter in a story from Ms. Bene are strong heroines that have a sassy wit, are resourceful and beautiful. In addition Phee, is also a dreamer of magic, fairy tales and fantasies of a world with knights and damsels.
You'll find it hard not to become compulsively and completely enamored with Phee. Her bestie, Regan, is no less a personality, physically different, boisterous and happy to induce sexual activity. Only a self assured, strong willed personality need apply.
This is a page burner of a story. Once you begin reading expect to be held completely captive for the first half of the story. Similar to the rush of events in the opening scenes from the Daniel Craig version of Casino Royale, it is pretty much non-stop action. Later, as things are reorganized, there are a more romantic interludes then it is off to the races once again.
This is a world controlled by a corrupt cabal separating the communities of the haves from the have not’s, isolating the later to an area covered by a dense perpetual fog. Ultimately an insurrection occurs and at some point everyone is knee deep in his or her version of justice. Therefore, out of the fog came the fire.
The brisk pace of events continues and creative pearls from the author's mind are dropped before us from Phee's dialogue. In one chapter Ms. Bene bravely devotes attention to the impact on a relationship where an individual has experienced the victimization of conflict, bears the fear of being considered damaged goods, and struggles with a partner who can’t reconcile the events and move beyond "the every thing is fine game." It was a cathartic scene, which required great skill in expressing concern, rage, fear, and remorse before reconciliation, and what a healthy reconciliation it was.
There are times to fight, times to lead and times to play. With Phee and Bryant there is never a dull moment before they achieve their hard earned HEA. Their time together wasn't easy, as described in the epilogue, and the conclusion is tissue worthy. They fought for what they have achieved and in the end he gives her the fairy tale she always dreamed of.
A few final words of advice, don’t date a waitress from a restaurant, unceremoniously dump her, and then return for a meal at a later time. Not a good idea.
For we road warriors this story is a perfect one trip read. It is a useful unguent for the pain of air travel.
You absolutely know it's a great read when you get so lost in the story you lose all track of time, place and the need for sleep! I adore Phee, she is not perfect, but she's perfect for this story, this world that was Dark and very different from what I was expecting.
I'm struggling with what to say, awesome, exciting, kept me up past my bedtime seem like such tame words for such an amazing read! I guess the book hangover has clung, my mind is still absorbing the feelings this book gave me, and it definitely made me tear up!
So I guess my best words of advice would be, buy it, make extra time to read it, and just get lost in a new world!
Whenever I read Jennifer Bene's books I can't help get swept up in her stories and the absolute alpha hot men and the sassy women that bring them to their knees. This story wasn't the usual dark flavor Bene writes with but it was just as delicious. I thought Phee and Bryant were sexy and so swoony.
I loved that story had a touch of a dystopian feel. I loved learning about the classes of people and the Fog. I was hooked and compelled from the very first page. Phee was my favorite part of this story as she was outspoken and blunt and such a strong heroine. I also love that this story had the trademark sexy and steamy that this author is known for.
All in all, this was fantastic and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future! Bravo! 4 Stars! ~Ratula
