I really loved Sara Holland's Everless duology Havenfall sounded amazing, so I decided to read it once I got it.
Shall we cover the good and bad???

The Bad and confusing:
•While it kind of goes right into the story, it drags on and says or hint at the same things over and over.
• There was a lot of information that could have been added to the storyline and if Maddie's self deprecation and feeling sorry for herself were cut out of every few pages that this story really could have moved on a lot quicker and could have been more developed.
•Personally, I feel so cheated that the realms are mentioned repeatedly in this book and you get hints as to what the places will be like, but you never see any of them!!!
•Brekken. Why, as a soldier, would you run away back home if you witnessed a murder instead of going to the Innkeeper Marcus to begin with?🤷‍♀️
•It was pretty obvious who the bad guy was once he was brought into the story as a main focal point.
•Does Maddie's father not know about Nate? Ever? It seems very confusing how the father would never tell Maddie that Nate wasn't her biological brother..

The Good:
The premise behind this book is fantastic! I love the realms and that the main character is not a princess or of royalty.

In closing,
I REALLY hope the next book goes in detail about the realms and we actually get to see someone go in their realm so we know what it's all about. What really happened with the Solarians that caused them to be written out? More on the great (great?) grandma and her connection with the Solarians.
I hope their is little to no self deprecation and feeling sorry for oneself.

This has an interesting premise, but the author sells her whole premise short by not allowing her earth characters to survive in other realms. Instead, all the action takes place in the inn. That could be cool, but somehow the action lags. We spend so much time with the narrator who is fretting about "whether she can do this" that we end up thinking, "no you can't do this!" Also, the narrator is in love with her childhood friend, a guy, but meets a new mysterious person, a woman. And I was rooting for her and the woman to get together. We're teased with it but NO. I felt upset by that.

The story was good and there were some parts that I did not see coming that were good surprises. But there were other times where it felt very predictable and out of place with other situations.
I did enjoy the story. I’m not DYING to read the sequel if there is one but I would consider it.

It wasn’t great or in my opinion, well written. But it did have an interesting concept and some fun surprises.

If you’re interested in the plot, make sure you read the book and don’t guide yourself in just comments from someone else. This is really cool idea, unfortunately (personally) I did not like the main character, I wish she would have been more interesting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Mystery in a Magical Setting
Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2020
I liked the idea of this inn being the neutral zone connecting so many different realms. And the cover is stunning - and that's before I even noticed the woman's head forming the mountain.

Initially, I was skeptical about this book. The first several pages are descriptions of each realm, their people, and their magic - basically an info dump - and I hoped that wasn't an indicator of how the rest of the book would play out. After the first few chapters, I was relieved that wouldn't be the case.

Maddie is easy to like and care about. Havenfall is her safe space where she's accepted and feels needed, but soon after she arrives for the summer, her world gets turned upside down. For me, it seemed pretty obvious early in the story who she shouldn't trust, so it wasn't a complete shock when everything comes to a head near the end. Still, I enjoyed seeing Maddie begin to figure things out and learn to trust her instincts.

The supporting characters are helpful and occasionally fun, but none of them really shine or jump off the page. With the majority of this story taking place at the inn, I'd love to venture into the other realms in the next book and learn more about the magic.

Havenfall may not offer any earth-shattering revelations or breathtaking highs and lows, but it's an evenly-paced book containing an intriguing mystery in a magical setting and a series I plan to continue.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantasy adventure at an Inn between the worlds

My thanks to Bloomsbury Publishing U.K. for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Havenfall’ by Sara Holland in exchange for an honest review. This originally was offered as an extract though the publisher kindly granted me access to the complete text.

‘Havenfall’ is narrated by sixteen-year-old Maddie Marrow, whose only solace from her dysfunctional life are the summers she spends with her uncle, Marcus, who runs the Inn at Havenfall, Colorado.

However, this beautiful manor holds a powerful secret as beneath it lies hidden gateways to other worlds, some long sealed. On the Summer Solstice each of the worlds with active gateways send a delegation to Havenfall for the Annual Peace Summit to negotiate trade and political agreements as well as to interact and celebrate.

Maddie has known this secret for years and hopes one day to inherit the role of innkeeper when her uncle retires. However, on the opening night a dead body is found on the grounds and her uncle is attacked. Maddie is forced to step into his role aided by his husband and senior members of the delegations.

This proved a very entertaining novel with rich descriptions and an appealing cast of characters as well as plenty of adventure, intrigue, and revelations. I was gripped from the opening through to its climax. There is romance but it is quite restrained and organic rather than it dominating other aspects of the narrative.

I appreciated that Sara Holland opened with a brief introduction to the adjacent realms including how the Inn at Havenfall functioned as the Omphalos for them. While classified as Teen/YA, I feel that it will appeal to a wider readership.

There was a lot for me to enjoy here as I am very partial to stories containing magical gateways and other worlds. I found this a promising opening for this series with a number of avenues to explore in future books. I will certainly be on the lookout for its continuation and will likely read her other novels as I enjoy her style.

With its publication today I was happy to purchase its ebook/audiobook combination.

I bought this book for my Kindle on a whim when someone in a Facebook book group I'm in recommended it. And I am so glad I did!
The story follows the journey of Maddie Morrow and her emergence from childhood to adulthood in a Secret Inn that holds doorways to other worlds. Fantasy lovers, beginning drooling now!
Without spoiling it, the books touches on diversity, equality, trust, friendship and rising to the occasion, both in Maddies personal feelings and as a broader subject. But that's not what I loved. I was captured by the idea of the doorways and the other realms. I love fantasy because of exactly this- it's new, it's completleyade up, it's there for you to forge your in your own imagination and whatever you come up with, it's never wrong. Again, without spoilers, the off world characters gave this book excitement, feeling and adventure. The plot itself is very easy flowing and carries you through the book well, but leaves you guessing because there is a huge plot twist... Or 6!!!... Which kept me reading late into the night! I just couldn't leave it until I knew what had happened... But again, spoilers, so I'll say no more on those.
The best thing about this book is that with all those dormant doorways, there is potential for a series, for many more new worlds to emerge, for hundreds of new and exciting characters to let my imagination go wild on... So come on Sara, get writing! I can't wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Premise; Uninteresting Protagonist

Read this book as part of my bookclub reads. I did enjoy it, although the protagonist is not at all a sympathetic character, and that really drew my attention away from an otherwise engaging fantasy story. The world-building invites discussion amongst fans, and I have definitely come away from this book with an intrigue into what else could be explored. I am, perhaps, a little older than the target audience, and your average "moody teenager" may relate better to the main character. I'd still recommend it for lovers of fantasy of all ages. It is an easy read and you will blast through it in no time.

A story that gently draws you in, building up the mystery and characters whilst questioning the possibilities at every end and turn.
An accord between three species from adjoining worlds is not as simple as it appears, and was a world justifiably banished?

The main character must struggle with confused emotions, along with understanding politicking, secrecy and trickery in the union.
Success, failures and uncertainty’s keep the story going at a good pace, and I couldn’t stop until the very end.
Don’t miss it.
