Women's Ministry Toolbox
5.0 out of 5 stars A great mentoring resource for women's ministry leaders!

As a mentor to women's ministry leaders, I highly recommend Growing Together. Melissa provides the framework and content for women's ministry teams to easily and quickly launch a mentoring ministry.

Melissa uses the first two chapters of Growing Together to unpack what mentoring can be as well as setting expectations for the mentor/mentee. Ground rules are a good thing!

The remaining nine chapters walk mentors/mentees through important topics, some not often talked about in women’s ministry, such as church attendance and service. Melissa anchors the content of each chapter in God’s Word, sprinkling in applicable real-life examples. I found the chapters to be just the right length. While each chapter could entail an entire book (and as noted in the Recommended Reading in the appendix, there are whole books on these topics), Melissa manages to go just deep enough in the short space of a chapter for participants to have a hearty discussion on the subject.

Melissa's book will help remove the excuses so many mentors offer up by providing them with content and discussion questions to use during their meetings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Usful, short, for beginners

I had too many expectations of this book. I can say that it is useful to disciple a woman from zero. Preferably if she is a new believer. If you have been a believer for many years ... Let's say it serves to review concepts, but I do not know if it is redundant or uncomfortable to address such basic topics again.

I thought that it would be more than anything a book full of questions to initiate topics or bring the relationship closer and make it grow from someone who is already in Christ and must mature in order to disciple others.

I do not criticize the book as totally bad, it is organized, it is just that it is not what I needed or had in mind to use with women who already know Christ and still need or ask for mentoring. I enjoyed reading it as they are topics of interest to me. I would consider addressing those topics with someone.

There were some things that reminded me of my grandmother and that this author does not share ... for example the verse of "Therefore, be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:48" the author says that it is not necessary to be perfect and places a lot of emphasis on exposing weaknesses. I think I understand her point, but the way she put it ... I think it lends itself to misinterpretation. Quote: "Perfection is impossible. However, we can be women who seek to love God in all we think, say an do. That's what your mentee needs most: a woman who earnestly desires to know God and glorify him with her life" ... "Perfection isn't the goal. Instead, try to develop healthy patterns of bible reading". I suggest if you are interested in this topic ... check Adorned by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth and Susan Hunt's books. I will keep waiting for a title on this topic perhaps, or I will continue with interviews with devoted women.

5.0 out of 5 stars clear and helpful guide to mentoring
Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2020
This is a wonderful resource for anyone interested in mentoring. The book is designed primarily to be used in a one-on-one discussion, but can also be used in small groups. Each chapter begins with a quote from another author, which is a great way to introduce readers to other voices. The chapters conclude with ways to prepare for the mentoring meeting, discussion questions for the meeting itself, and an activity or thought-provoking question to consider in between meetings to foster ongoing growth.

Two of my biggest hurdles to mentoring are knowing what to talk about and staying on topic. This books meets both of these challenges. I love that the chapters cycle through three broad themes: love for God, his people, and the world. These hit all the main areas of the Christian life, challenging me to consider areas of strength as well as weakness. I also love the discussion questions at the end of each chapter - they provide an easy way to get conversation started. But one of my favorite things about the book are the extra activities Melissa includes in each chapter - things for the reader to consider before and after each meeting. It's so easy to just read the chapters and not really engage in active growth each month. But the "Before You Meet" and "Until You Meet Again" sections spur me on to keep thinking and growing outside of the meetings - and provide things to talk about beyond just the chapters themselves.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be mentored or interested in mentoring others!
