A sexy dark tightrope of deception and desire this book enthralled me with its tightly woven puzzle pieces and smart pacing. I’d never read Amber Bardan prior, but you can be sure she's definitely on my radar now.

“It’s like I’m sitting in front of a puzzle, and I have all the pieces – pieces I’ve been staring at for years, but I can’t work out how they slot together.”

One bloody birthday party changed the course of Sarah Mercedes’ (h) life as she knew it. Young and somewhat sheltered this shipping heiress is the pawn in a game she wasn’t aware of and doesn’t know how to play. She’s doing her best to tread the waters that threaten to engulf her, but sometimes your best just isn’t enough. And the prince you’re hoping to rescue you doesn’t always wear a white hat.

“He has a weakness – there’s a chink in his armor, and it’s me. I’m going to break through it. Be the one to capture him.”

Julian King (H) is a man on a mission. This mission? Sarah Mercedes. The beautiful young woman is entrenched deeply in his heart – she just has no idea. Mystery and murder are synonymous with his name but few truly know the heart of this man. Torn between showing Sarah who he was and who he is he’s sworn to keep Sarah captive until he completes his mission…no matter what the sacrifices required.

“I never know what I want more, to pull her apart piece by piece or beg her to put me back together. Neither will be gentle.”

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book. What I got was a tautly woven story of suspense, mystery, betrayal, anger, hurt, hate and love all rolled up in an intricate riddle that kept me turning the pages well into the night and early hours of the morning. Superbly placed flashbacks dole out a trail of crumbs leading you through the maze of information and intrigue playing out in the present. The push/pull between Julian and Sarah is a palpable longing and unwanted complication for Sarah that had me raging and submitting right along with her. The seductive pull Julian has over Sarah juxtaposed with the push she feels for freedom – escape – had me dying for the rest of the pieces to come together revealing the truth behind all of the secrets I’d learned. My emotions were all over the place alternating between wanting Julian to capture the heart of his captive and then Sarah to escape and find her happiness – her freedom and then hoping that just maybe she could find her escape in Julian’s arms. The twist had my heart breaking for them both and completed the puzzle at just the right time, pulling all the pieces together and making me root for their fight to overcome the odds against them. There were a lot of pieces in this book. Ms. Bardan did an excellent job of pacing and plotting; I never felt lost in the story.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you, baby.”

On the surface you think this story starts as a masquerade of fantasy, the innocent princess and the king of darkness stowed on a tropical island, but once the mask starts to slip the layers and depth of the painful and heartbreaking connection between Julian and Sarah captured my attention totally investing me in their troubled and absorbing journey to Happily Ever After. I highly recommend this tale of a mysterious King and his beloved captive and cannot wait for the next puzzle Ms. Bardan creates.

“Loved her without her understanding how or why. Loved her when there was hope and when there was not. Loved her even when loving meant destroying everything else.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! Hooked on this author!

I'm so glad that I picked this book up. It was totally random for me, I've never read this author before (and now seriously regret that I've lived so long without), and while I was hoping that I would enjoy it, I wasn't holding my breath. I'm the type of person who goes into these things hoping for a decent story to go along with my smut. Sure, I like reading the dirty as much as the next person who picks up an erotica novel, but I also want it to make sense. This book had an amazing plot, well rounded characters, a fast pace, and twist after twist! Throughout the entire thing, there was only one part, at the middle, that bothered me and felt out of place. Generally, for an erotica, there are about a million things that I don't like plot-wise (or, more often than not, lack there of), so being annoyed at only one thing wasn't a deal breaker for me. I'm going to tell you about it though, because it did really bug me, so SPOILER ALERT!

Obviously, with all the plot twists in this book, some things that happen are going to come off one way and then later on be revealed to be something entirely different. This is great. I love this aspect of the book. One hundred percent. However, when a character does a complete one-eighty during one of these moments, just so that later one when the truth is revealed, it makes sense she didn't over react, that annoys me. It doesn't seem legitimate, because, hello, SHE doesn't know that what she thinks is happening isn't! Only the author does. Sarah fights against Julius every turn she get's (if only mentally, but that's huge), and she's constantly thinking about how bad she believes him to be. Yet, the second that she finds out he "adopted" her brother...she's, for the most part, cool with it. She's confused at first, sure, but then....cool. That annoyed me. Yes, it's great he's taking care of your brother. Awesome. But that also means he's more than just kept you from him all this time. He's had him with him on the mainland, and didn't tell you. Imagine all the stories he could have shared, and all the birthdays you didn't have to miss because you could have, at the very least, skyped them. Yet, Sarah, who finds a reason to mistrust and hate him at literally every turn, let's this go. Like it's no big deal. Like the guy who, inadvertently (but in her mind still had a huge hand in it) got your father killed, kidnapped you, and wants to force you to marry him, then adopting your brother isn't weird. No. She let's it go and that feels so out of character to me, that it just annoyed me for the next twenty or so percent of the story. Okay, I'm done. That's my only complaint.

Everything else was amazing. I was completely sucked into their world, and I immediately went out and bought more by this author. The sex scenes were hot, and well written, and there was a hefty story to go along with it. This wasn't just quick smut for the sake of getting off, which for me anyway, makes all the difference. I love books and story and plot, so as great as reading about sex is, I don't read solely for those. Some of you will disagree, and that's cool. If you like story in your erotica though, good story, then I highly recommend this!

I wanted to love this story so much, it had everything going for it what with murder, criminals, hostage scenario and a mystery to be solved. However the MFC Sarah quite simply drove me crazy. I can’t divulge anymore without disclosing the secret but really you figure most of it out early on and it gets confirmed in the last chapters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different from what I expected

Reviewing this book apparently ain’t easy to me.
Mostly because it was quite different from what I expected and the way the story has been developed put me off in a way.
To keep it simple, it all revolves around a mystery that on one hand it was easy for me to guess, even if it still remained a secret in the book, and on the other this hidden truth didn’t really make any sense to me. I mean… I wondered why the author wanted to keep it hidden for almost 70% of the story. After all it wasn't that big plot twist, at least to me.
I had the feeling that the author has tried to keep the reader in the dark about a certain thing maybe to create a certain suspense, but the way she did it, did not work for me. Instead of keeping me eager, I lost interest and even felt annoyed a few times.
However, the MCs chemistry has been great and made up for the rest a little.

This is the first time I have read any of this author’s work, and OMG, I was totally blown away!! Sarah has been held captive on an island by Julius for 3 years, and she is always trying to escape. This is a dark, intense, suspenseful, and emotional, with twists and turns throughout. I was completely captivated and intrigued from the very beginning of this story.
This author has done an amazing job in writing this story, and it is worth so much more than the 5 star rating allowed!! I will certainly be adding Amber to my favourite and 1-click lists for the future, and I cannot wait to read more from her.
