5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Series

This is my favorite (cozy) mystery series. I have read each book in the series at least 4 times. The books are very well written and an easy read. Ms. Brightwell does an excellent job of describing things without being wordy. When a series goes for a while, usually the books start loosing something, but NOT with the Mrs. Jeffries series. Each book is just as strong as the previous one, and this book is no exception. The characters in the household and their situations progress as the series continues.

The Mrs. Jeffries series takes place in Victorian England. Mrs. Jeffries is the housekeeper to Inspector Witherspoon who works for Scotland Yard. Without his knowledge, the household (and some friends) help gather clues to help the inspector solve homicides. A very enjoyable series. (There are over 30 books in the series.)

I really enjoy all the Mrs. Jeffries books. This was didn't disappoint. The surprise in the chimney led to other plot twists and, of course, the inspector's staff helped him solve the murder(s) once again. Reading these books is like visiting old friends.

I chose this rating because, because I enjoyed reading it. It arrived in excellant condition and early. I enjoy reading all of the Mrs. Jefferies mysteries. They are entertaining and they are hard to put down once you start reading. I would recommend the Mrs. Jefferies series to anyone who enjoys reading mysteries that are interesting without having a lot of gory details. You are left wondering who the murderer is until the very end. This book keeps you interested all the way through til the very end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mrs Jeffries does it again

Inspector Witherspoon of Scoltand Yard is a nice man, but not a particulary good detective. His devoted housekeeper, Mrs Jeffries, and the rest of his equally devoted staff, help him to solve his cases without him knowing it. Mrs Jeffries passes on the information gleaned through hints and suggestions, so the Inspector aways ends up thinking he's solved the crimes himself. Once you have accepted this wildly improbable premise, you can get on with enjoying the stories. In this one, a clergyman has been found shot dead outside a church, and the skeleton of a young woman is found up a chimney, can Mrs Jeffries and her fellow servants solve these mysteries? Of course they can. Mrs Goodge the cook, Betsy the maid, Wiggins the footman, and Smythe the coachman, who is secretly engaged to Betsy (why secretly? Search me), and Mrs Jeffries herself, are all likeable characters, and their delight whenever there is a murder for them to investigate is underestandable, it's a lot more fun than housework. My favourite characters are the feisty American widow Luty Belle Cruickshank, and her argumentative butler Hatchet, who help Mrs Jeffries and co. with their investigations. Suspend disbelief and just enjoy the latest episode in this fun series.

Bought for my mother who loves these stories. Be prepared to suspend credulity though (servants who do the sleuthing for an inept detective; really?)
