Excitement is the release of a new P.T. Deutermann novel, whether it is his Cam Richter series, his Thriller series or his just released “The Iceman” part of his Sea Stories series. Lieutenant Commander Malachi Stormes is an American submarine Captain attached to the British Royal Navy in 1942. He makes a heroic sinking of three German U-Boats as they leave their base in German occupied France. Stormes is both decorated and promoted to Commander and given a new ship that is based in Perth Australia.
The novel brings the reader into the life of hunting Japanese vessels and being hunted themselves by the enemy. It is exciting and often times tense. Stormes quickly becomes one of the top submarine drivers in the Pacific. He is aggressive and perhaps lacking the qualities of a people person, thus the nickname given him by his crew of Iceman.
While the patrols of his submarine, the Firefish, are long and dangerous, Stormes does find romance and companionship when returning to Perth. It is easy to visualize Australia during a time of war, as did this non-Navy military veteran during the Vietnam war. Stormes also has to deal with torpedoes and their early problems, while facing a Japanese submarine force that has torpedoes superior to the Americans torpedoes.
The United States lost fifty-two submarines during WWII, with the loss of life of 375 officers and 3131 enlisted men. It was a dangerous military occupation. As with all Deutermann books, the reader simply does not want it to end. Great reading!
