5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent as always

Ms lackey has always been my all time favorite bard. The first thing I ever read of hers was magic's pawn, promise and price. I immediately found Diana afterwards and there was no possible hope of my ever finding my way out of her (ms. Lackey's) worlds, again.
I first read Diana in the late eighties or early nineties. I, naturally, went on with the serrated edge and bedlam bards series, as well as keeping up with velgarth, and eventually the 500 kingdoms hooks. I could jot possibly recommend a better author for anyone who loves to read. She has great talent, and even better, great wisdom and advice. Do not miss out on your chance to find out for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always good!

I 1st read this book many years ago when it first came out and I loved it. I wish that Ms. Lackey had created a lot more Diana Tregarde books. The Diana Tregarde books are fantastic! Diana is a guardian protecting the innocent from evil baddies. Andre is cool and it's interesting that she included the Romany in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was definitely a good read and a great continuation of the Diana Tregarde ...

This was definitely a good read and a great continuation of the Diana Tregarde series. I loved that you got to meet some new characters and that it drew on other world traditions and seamlessly incorporated them into the story. One thing I will say: I wish that the author would be a little clearer in terms of establishing real-world timelines and locations. For example, in the first book, I was under the impression that the books were written in "real-time", that is to say, now or at least the present time when the author was writing. This book was very hazy on that; it seemed like it was set in the 1970s based on clothing descriptions and that kind of thing. Don't get me wrong; me and my big Pam Grier afro love the 70s, but it didn't make sense with the timeline in which I understood the first book to be set. It would have been more helpful to the storyline if I had a better grasp on when exactly it was supposed to be taking place. That's my only real criticism, and even that could be chalked up to my not having read the first book with as much scrutiny. That being said, I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed the first Diana Tregarde book. She is the same, down-to-earth, cool-without-trying fun protagonist that she was in the first book. The character descriptions in this were amazing; I found it really easy to let my imagination run wild with this book. It was great.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STORY

The only thing I will ever say negative about this novel is the author killed off the series and didn’t write more. I have done some research and discovered the author abandoned the series due to outside influences with fans; something about a stalker if I’m not mistaken and it just ruined the series for the author, but yet beyond this tragedy this is an awesome story. I’ve read and read and read this series, especially “Children of the Night” edition, and will never get enough of it. I imagine reading this novel well into my twilight years. I first bought this novel in paperwork years ago, decades ago, and now have it on my Nook with the Kindle App. attachment to purchase this through Amazon. Great buy and highly recommend this to any fan of vampires and the supernatural.

I had forgotten how much I loved these characters especially Mercedes Lackey’s strong willed, stubborn female characters! The story line is eventful and moves along smoothly! It a cover to cover read without time to cook. Takeout menus keep within reach and make the little heathens fetch fresh hot tea for you! Onwards my friends to the next adventure, Book 3 is calling me. No sleep for the determined!

Revisited this Author and series after many years. I still enjoy the Author's creation. It is interesting how you can see the trends reflected through time. How the lore and changes of story line have occurred as the genre has evolved.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mercedes Lackey is great as always

My only problem with this series is it gets bogged down, and very slow in places. This one focused a lot on her having panic attacks without ever really detailing what caused them. Seems to be a common theme in this genre.... I thought I had read every book and story in this series but I don't recall seeing anything that explains the cause. The book immediately before this one didn't have any details... Seems it would be very difficult to defend the innocent if you are afraid to leave your apartment...

Still the writing is wonderful and evocative. I love Ms. Lackey's technique. She pulls you into the story and holds your attention, painting pictures with her words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific beginning for the Diana Tregarde series

Apparently Marc Ruby doesn't know the order . . . this is the FIRST book in the series, followed by "Burning Water" then "Jinx High." This book introduces us to the character of Diana Tregarde, a Guardian because of her strong psi(onic)(and psychic) talents. This books takes place sometime about a decade prior to the two other books in her series - in the early 70s, right after Watergate. Diana is helping out a friend by watching her occult shop when trouble walks in the door . . . *heh, couldn't help myself* A tall, Saturnine man with "predator" written all over him comes into the shop and starts to zoom in on some young girls in the shop, so Diana runs him off. Soon after, a very handsome young man comes in and is looking for this other fellow, so she points him off after him. Finally, after the shop is closed, a young Gypsy boy comes from the back of the shop - trying to escape from the first man. Don't want to give too much away, but as is made evident in the information about the book, the second man into her shop is Andre, a vampire spawned about the time of the French Revolution. I think this is my favorite of the three books, because it is the only one in which we actually hear ANYTHING about Andre, except when Diana talks to him on the phone in other books. At any rate, eventually Diana has to go up against 4 psi-vampires (they drain the energy from people and can project negative emotions into their prey in order to gain more energy from them) and a gaki, which is a sort of Chinese soul-sucker. Very spooky. Well written, fast-moving and exciting, I LOVE this book! For anyone who likes vampire books, the earlier Anita Blake novels or Mercedes Lackey.

Having started the Diana Tregarde series with "Burning Water" which I really liked, I found Children of the night rather disappointing. I don't know if it's meant to be a prequel but the collected clever Diana of Water has been replaced by a ditherer suffering from serial panic attacks. It could easily have been about a completely different character.

Another great story from Mercedes Lackey. The Tregarde books are very entertaining and clever - not quite on the level of the Valdemar books (which are huge favourites of mine) but still good.

5.0 out of 5 stars book 2 Diana Tragarde

Number 2 in the Diana Tregade novels by Mercedes Lackey. This book is every bit as good as Burning Water the first novel in this series. In this book we are introduced to Andre a vampire with a conscience. He assists Diana and her friends against not one, but two evil baddies. He also seems to be a possibly more permanent friend of Diana's in the long run.

Lots of action and magic and good versus evil. Mercedes has written another wonderful book that again will get me in trouble at work. Reading till 2 a.m. (Ack Emma? What the heck does that mean?) And then getting up at 5 for work does not put me on the top of my game. But enough about me........

This book is well written as books by Mercedes Lackey are and will keep you turning imaginary pages (kindle) until you are done. I am looking forward to book 3 starting........now!

This is a fun modern fantasy novel by Lackey. I read it years ago but it stones the test of time. Diana is slowly becoming stronger in her role as Guardian; she meets up with an old boyfriend who needs magical help at the same time as she hooks up with a potential new love. Exciting story!
