4.0 out of 5 stars A great intro to this author. A tale with a plot and twists I couldn't see coming.
Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2020
This is not a tale with nice characters; I didn't like anyone, though the kids were tolerable. It's a tale about greed and about money bringing out people's true colours and about how money doesn't necessarily change lives for the better. After reading this, I did feel different about possibly winning on the lottery and what it might reveal, a bit like in vino veritas.

Not having read AP before, I expected a bit of chick lit with intelligence and whilst I got the latter, I was glad I was mistaken about the former. The meshing of the lives and details, and especially the prologue that I wondered how would fit in with the tale, was impeccable. I was not that sad about the lives that ended up changed because tbh it felt like the lot of them had superficial values and lives, but some good came out of it, with one of the victims of the prologue part ended up not quite with justice being done, but with something fulfilling and life changing. I'm glad that the bad guys here - there were several - got what they deserved, especially the one who did something so stupid and despicable that I was almost in shock; that part was really satisfying and well done. Did I like the manipulation and the games and lies? No, but it was weirdly addictive to see everything unravel and fall apart.

I'm going to be looking out for this author in future.

ARC courtesy of HQ and NetGalley, for my reading pleasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just WOW
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021
WOW!! Just wow! Adele Parks has truly written a page turner here. Lots of surprises to be had too.

I think most people have dreamed of winning the lotto. I know my hubby and I have. Though I honestly have always said that we are not rich for a reason. I believe it would have made us so different if we had been rich or won. I'm afraid of what it would have done to our lives. Would it have torn us apart. Made our love and respect for each other weak and usless? I believe we are meant to be right where we are. After reading this book I am even more sure of that... We may not be rich but we are happy. We have each other!

"You never know your luck, our numbers might come up next week, and then all our lives will changed forever." How true these words are. Little did the three couples know exactly how true.

Lexi and Jake have been friends with Patrick, Carla, and Fred, Jennifer, have been friends for over fifteen years. They get together at one's home each week to eat, drink and socialize. Also to play the lottery. They dream of what they will do with the money should they ever win....

When the numbers come up and they do win things take a huge turn. The three couples lives will never be the same. Greed, hate, selfishness, and kindness take over each person's life. Jake is to me the worse person in this whole story. From the minute he and Lexi win it seems like he changed. He became a very self centered man. It was all about me me me.. Lexi didn't wish for big things. She started wanting to help other right from the start. But they did cut out their best friends. When you read this you will understand why.

This is a story that will make you have deep feelings about a few things. It's two stories that run together. At the beginning you meet Toma, who lost his wife and child. He lost everything after that. He gave up on life. You will find out all that happened and who was at fault. Who helped him and was truly his friend. This book is deep in my opinion. It shows what extent people will go too for money. I think the children did exactly as a child would. No matter how good a parent you are if you come into lots of money the child is going to want things. Expensive things. That is just being a child. They want what other kids have. Human nature possibly at it's worse but it's there.

A lot happens to Lexi and her family after they win the lottery. Some things will leave you breathless. A few shocks thrown in to make it even more intense. At least for me it was. When I read one sentence my breath literally hitched. I was not expecting it. Not all of it anyway.

The ending brings all answers. Closes great. You won't be left with any questions. The characters are mostly unlikable with the exception of Lexi and Toma. I loved them both. The children of course. You have to love them. They are just children who do stupid things sometimes and end up regretting...

Thank you #NetGalley, #AdeleParks, #Harlequin, for this ARC. This is my own true thoughts about this book.

I gave it 5/5 stars. I was going to go with 4/5 but when all was revealed I had to go with that extra star. It was in my humble opinion brilliantly done. I do highly recommend this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Greed mixed with a lack of class
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2021
Once upon a time there were 3 couples who met when all 3 women were expecting at the same time. They remained friends for 15 years living close to one another and spending lots of time together. Their children were at school together and the parents spent one evening together usually 3 times a month. They decided to all pitch in and play the same numbers on the lottery every week. They never won but just laughed it off. But one weekend at a get-together, something happened that caused dissension among them and two couples said they did not want to be a part of the lottery any more. But, one couple continued to play the same numbers the following week - and won 17.8 million pounds.

Lexi and Jake Greenwood are thrilled to have won the lottery. As they are claiming the money, the Heathcotes and the Pearsons step up saying they want to share the money denying they stepped away from the group. In comes the lawyers and out goes any friendship that had been.

This is a complicated story that shows the epitome of greed and not just by the lottery winners. It also shows a lack of class and couth in some people vs. the guilty need to give away what you have. Lexi is a twit with no backbone. She’s a true pushover. Jake is the dirt on the bottom on your shoe. Ah, but let’s discuss the Heathcotes and the Pearsons and their lack of anything. This is a story of what happens when people with no self-control win the lottery. Rating this book is difficult because the author has written a story of pure greed so I must applaud her talent in doing so.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a disappointing read - I could barely persevere enough to finish it...

This book was so far from Adele Park's normal standards, that I wonder if it was written by her at all! Poorly written, badly edited, unlikable characters and an implausible plot, makes this book one of the worst I've read in a long time. It had no substance and the "twist" at the end was poorly executed. A waste of my time and money....

2.0 out of 5 stars A chore to read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 4, 2020

I found this book abit of a chore to finish in all honesty. Very unlikable characters with the exception of Toma (the reason for the 2nd star) and I didn't mind Logan - most likely because the latter isn't very relevant to the story. The story was completely unbelievable, Lexi is very bizarre, the whole driving to the friends house to see if they're really out.. weird and Jake is the most loathsome character even before I reached the end. The ending is rushed after being dragged out for nearly 300 pages. My first time reading an Adele Parks book after pre ordering this in March but highly likely to be my last.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite an irritating read

A book which annoyed me so much that I had to finish it by reading it in installments. I particularly fond the overuse of social media acronyms and abbreviations irritating - not everyone knows what they mean and having to frequently stop to Google them is very annoying. I also found the main character far too self-righteous and, on occasion, implausibly submissive. Not a book which would encourage me to read more by this author, I'm afraid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adele's best yet, a magnificent novel!

Twenty books in Twenty years is quite something, but to consistently make each one better than the last, is something else. Yet it is something that Adele Parks manages with ease.

Regular readers of my blog will know that I am a huge fan of Adele's so it is difficult for me to write an unbiased review, but I always try to, and anyone who knows me will know that I am very honest, sometimes brutally so.

Just My Luck I think may be my favourite of Adele's novels so far, it's very clever, with lots of twists to keep the reader guessing right up until the end.

Let's be honest for a moment, we've all sat and wondered what we would do with the money if we were to win the lottery. Haven't we?

Well for Lexi and Jake, that seemingly impossible dream is now a reality.

The unthinkable has happened, all six of their numbers have come up, they are rich beyond their wildest dreams. It should be perfect, they can now have the life that they have always dreamt of. But money does strange things to people and Lexi and Jake quickly realise that they have very different ideas on how their new found winnings should be spent.

And that's only the start of it, because Lexi and Jake have played the same six numbers for the last fifteen years with their so called friends the Heathcotes and the Pearsons, but a rift in the group before the win has torn the relationship apart.

When they hear of Lexi and Jake's win, the two couples are determined to get their hands on their share of the winnings, no matter what the cost...

Just My Luck is a thrilling ride through a roller coaster of complex family relationships, adult friendships and trust. It is magnificent and I can't wait for everyone to read it!

Unfortunately I found this hard going. I got bored with the storyline despite there being lots of elements to it: it just didn’t seem believable and I found it hard to empathise with the main character or her daughter.
The ending annoyed me as well.

Sorry Adele Parks but this wasn’t as good as some of your previous books.
