Goodnight Stranger by Miciah Bay Gault

I really liked this psychological slow burn. Not sure if it's thriller genre, I guess that's subjective. It was for me.
Many things are relatable, in particular the island community's secrecy and insulation, like it's a social norm. Lydia is so well-defined and real to me in how she tries to navigate these confusing waters.
Reading this was like going home again feels everytime I go.
Miciah writes beautifully. There are so many passages I could point out; my Kindle highlights started looking like one big highlight.
I found Goodnight Stranger while randomly looking at literature sites. Thankfully I found a site that offers suggestions for books that are both well written and intriguing. Some compare Miciah Bay Gault's writing to Shirley Jackson, not an easy thing to live up to yet I can see it.

Goodnight Stranger by Miciah Bay Gault works on many levels. The plot is gripping and fast paced enough to be a wonderful beach read. In addition, the writing style is beautiful and well crafted, which lifts it a step above the usual temporary entertainment. And then the themes of loss, family and overcoming obstacles makes the book something that will stay with you as all great pieces of literature do. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh i loved this book

This was recommended by my friend Lee Woodruff, herself a writer, a chronicler of fact and fiction. So, when she tells me a book is really wonderful, I feel certain that I'll also think so. And, wuth this one especially, she's was so right.
The story itself, the twists and turns she created, the information lurking around every corner...that was all wonderful. The language, the rhythms. All wonderful. And, having twins plus knowing mothers of both twins and triplets, I knew that bond she described, really really well.
I hope you'll love this book, too.

The only problem with "Goodnight Stranger" is the story is so compelling, it is easy to read too fast and miss the poetic and lovely writing of Gault's prose. Quirky characters, a plot that will make you heart race, and a setting so real you can feel the salt water on your lips as you turn each page, and turn you will, as Gault's story is gripping and full of surprises. I could not put this book down. Excellent.

Goodnight Stranger. I absolutely loved this book! I couldn't put it down so it was read in a couple of days. The story is told by Lydia. She is likable and honest. She is someone you'd want to be friends with. As she shares her story (and mystery!) with you, you are transported along beside her. Why?

Because Miciah Bay Gault is an extraordinary writer. Her prose is often lyrical. There are hundreds of passages that I read and reread several times because they were just lovely to imagine. Lydia says: "I felt an electric sensation coursing through me, as if I'd swallowed ocean water bright with bioluminescence. I could feel those water-stars gliding up and down the avenues of my body." Or about her brother: "Lucas was grinning. He looked like he might take off flying, unfold surprise wings and lift into the darkness". Or about the stranger: "Memories were of special interest to him. He collected them, studied them ... as if memories could make a man rich." Wow! This book will have you wanting more from this author. Miciah, I can hardly wait for the next one!

Why this book isn't a best seller yet I don't know, but it is terrific! A great story, deftly written--her prose is almost poetic at times--story kept me enthralled all the way through, and the tension is palpable as the sisterm Lydia, tries to figure out just who this stranger is. Notr going into the plot--as you should read this one for yourself. Just a terrific read and as great job in writing. Joan Conning Afman--author
