3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not my favorite

Tina Devino is a romance author who also critiques and workshops other authors. She has a lover, Sergei, an ex-ballet dancer who she sees once a week, and a pretty good life despite never making it past the midlist rankings for her books. When her ex-husband suddenly becomes her new publisher and her agent wants to drop her, Tina has to decide what she really wants from life.
This one is a bit different from other books I've read by Ms. Ashley, written in first person POV and I have to admit I didn't enjoy it as much. It almost felt like a series of vignettes for a certain time frame and not quite a complete story. This author always writes well and develops her characters enjoyably for the reader, so it's still a good story - just not one of my favorites.

2.0 out of 5 stars A tad disappointing

I was quite looking forward to this but, even though good, it’s not her best. It’s an earlier book and lacks the oomph that accompanies characters in her later work. Worth reading but if you were hoping for Rhymers or more flowers from Lancashire you won’t find it here.

4.0 out of 5 stars This book grew on me!

I almost stopped, but kept on as I've LOVED everything else from this author. I like stories told via letters but this seemed slow to get going and engage. BUT, it did and ultimately, I really liked the book and the story told.

While this was a quick read, and humorous, it won't become one of my favorites by, this author. The style is 1st person combined with correspondence....and I like to have a book with conversations!

It would be interesting to know if the author herself was going through writer's angst when she wrote it. Maybe a tad autobiographical. It just stopped without an ending.

2.0 out of 5 stars Literally the only one of her books I didn't enjoy

Main character isn't that likable and then ending wasn't satisfying. Read ANY OTHER BOOK by this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment

I purchased this book not realising it was a reissue of a book previously published in 2008. Looking through the list of Trisha Ashley's novels I saw that 3 of her books released recently, (including this one) have all been previously published under different names. I think some sort of warning should be given at the description of the book and not let the purchaser find out after the book has been sent to them. Not only that I think this re-releasing under a different name is sort of cheating. I was very disappointed.

I've loved all the other Trisha Ashley books I've read and was looking forward to this, even though the author warns that it's a rehash of an earlier book. I'd bought several books on my kindle and left this until last to savour. I wish I hadn't bothered. The book meanders back and forth, there's no spark, almost no plot, Tina doesn't know what or who she wants, and almost immediately forgives her unfaithful 'boyfriend' when he sleeps with her disloyal BFF. I didn't even realise the book had ended until I was into the recipe pages! If you're a fan of her other books, I'd give this one a miss.

Anyone who has ever tried to write any kind of fiction will be nodding and laughing (yes, both at once) as they read this sparkling and very welcome reissue of one of Trisha’s earlier novels. Tina Devino, novelist and teacher of creative writing, has words of wisdom for wannabe authors, but this novel is not just for writers. It’s for readers, too. What do writers do all day? Why aren’t they all millionaires? How do they deal with rejection, black moods and blind panic? It’s time to find out.

There are recipes, too, and if you want to get some genuine lowdown on becoming a writer, Trisha suggests some useful sources in a helpful afterword.

Happy reading and maybe writing, too. Tina Devino certainly inspired me!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother

The title of this book is quite ironic as finding someone with a heart within its pages was just about impossible. The main character is a sad, shallow person who prefers living alone and is more interested in her career than her personal relationships. The plot is circular. It makes a loop and looks like it is going somewhere but then it turns back and lands back almost where it started. So once you've read the first few pages there is no point in going on as you now know the end. The characters don't develop.

The cover is quite misleading as most of the non-action takes place in London.

I am a huge Trisha Ashley fan and have always automatically pre-ordered her books. I'll be more cautious in future.

I enjoyed this - it's been a while since I've read a Trisha Ashley - and I'm not sure why, because I remember laughing out loud last time round and loosing myself for a full Stephen's Day within Trisha World!
This was even better, I think, it depicts the life of a mid list author who is forced to take a back seat while other younger, snazzier writers (probably one hit wonders!) over take her. It seems like, even her midlist career is about to slip, as well as everything else in her life for a while, but then, fate, a little work and Tina's warmth all impact events, so we are laughing to the very end and smiling, with an 'Ah Yes,' when everything turns out just as it should at the finish! Loved it!!
