4.0 out of 5 stars Where is Alice Teale? 4*

Alice Teale Is Missing follows the disappearance a of 17yr old girl, which adds layers and layers of depth the standard missing person case. Especially when the police begin to receive pages of Alice’s journal…

‘The old Alice Teale is dead’

The case is set in Northumbria and DC Beth Winter & DS Lucas Black are the police officers assigned to the case. We become aware that there is some gossip of controversy in DS Black’s pas career and that he is rumoured to have killed on the job. I liked the inclusion of these new police officers and I sincerely hope the author goes on to make this a series. I love the location of Northumbria and know that with its blend of coastal walks and urban city life, there is a wealth of scenes to create a crime drama around.

The disappearance of Alice Teale is a slow burn in the beginning, the crime appears to be motive-less and the family for all intents and purposes come across relatively ‘normal’. However, as with any teen once the team start to investigate the malicious gossip that surround Alice, her love life and adolescent desire… We learn things aren’t so motive-less after all. This is a story of teens coming of age in thoroughly modern times. The complex love lives and the vulnerability of impressionable teenage girls. But that just leaves the biggest question of all…. Where is Alice Teale? 4*

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow, dull and a let down

I give this a tiny two stars. It was just very, very dull. Although not a particularly long book it seemed to sep d ages not getting anywhere, very slowly. The pace was off, the first 80% crawled along and then there were a rash of action and revelations and everything g was tied up neatly in a very short time.

I didn’t warm to either of the police characters, or really none else. I didn’t really care why Alice was missing or why.

I also found the ‘spelling everything out’ approach to plot, action etc really annoying. It was a bit panto, a character would say ‘so that means.....’ or ‘you mean because x or y happened, it means ...’ it was a though the author felt we were incapable of working anything out for ourselves, we had to have every step or stage spoonfed to us and explained in simple terms. It was just annoying.

So, not for me. I don’t really understand the rave reviews, there are better books out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing detective thriller

DC Beth Winter & DS Lucas Black have a case to solve. They have only just met in a bleak Northumbrian town and they are trying to establish a working relationship, or at least Beth is. The disappearance of a bright, popular 17-year-old doesn’t seem to be causing much concern amongst the other police officers. They think she has run away but Beth and DS Black believe she is either dead or in serious trouble. When pages from her secret journal start being delivered, they learn more but are they being led along the wrong path?
I very much enjoyed reading how Beth dealt with her unfriendly boss and how she gradually began to understand him. They both live alone but are from different generations and backgrounds. What they have in common is the desire to find Alice and solve the case. There are several suspects and an interesting setting in the small town surrounding a large comprehensive school. The concerns of the teenagers and the more selfish approach of some of the adults is typical of any town in Britain. The geography and location of their investigations are clearly described which is necessary for the plot and the events thrilling and unexpected. I shall certainly be looking out for other novels by this author.

Alice Teale is Missing is the first in the Black and Winters series and what a start it was! A sinister killer opening draws you in through journal entries and the last confirmed sighting of Alice Teale and immediately I was hooked!

Right from the beginning I felt involved in the case and in the lives of the characters. DC Beth Winters and DS Lucas Black are a fictional pairing made in heaven. Beth feels she has to prove herself as a woman who is also a fast tracked detective, which brings with it plenty of negativity from her colleagues. She is paired up with Lucas, a detective who is not without his own demons on his shoulder. His reputation precedes him and Beth finds herself wondering if she has made the right move in her career.

I absolutely LOVED the relationship between both characters and the way in which the author teased out each of their personalities, at first they appear to rub each other up the wrong way but as each of them learn a little more about the other the ice begins to crack.

Other characters in the book are well written and developed, the author catches all the little nuances of each one of them, dropping little hints and red herrings keeping the reader hooked all the way through.

Small town life is portrayed through a stark and very dark narrative, I could almost feel the tension simmering through the pages, small town gossip and intrigue as little by little lies and secrets are uncovered exposing the dark underbelly of small town living.

I couldn’t put this book down and already I am champing at the bit for book two in the series! BRILLIANT!

DON’T MISS IT!

If I'm honest when I started reading this book, I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it even though the storyline sounded appealing, with its dark undertones and mystery surrounding the disappearance of 17 year old Alice Teale, it was the initial introduction to the characters. I know if I don't like them or can't relate to them as believable characters the story, no matter how good the plot, just won't hold my attention.

DC Beth Winter, a newbie detective constable is partnered to work with DS Lucas Black, the only thing she knows about him is gossip from a colleague, which doesn't paint him in a very good light. The fact he'd been suspended previously for killing someone plus an offhand attitude towards everyone, did nothing to calm her nerves.

How wrong I was to make a judgement at the beginning, the more I got to know the characters, the more I needed to know. The storyline is incredibly intense, lies, deception, secrecy, abuse, bullying you name it, it's all in there. Wonderfully written and so well thought out, it has you totally encapsulated right to the last page.

For me personally, no matter how good a story it's nothing without good characterisation. This has both in spades. I didn't want the story to end, Ok this now, in my opinion perfect duo solve their case, but I wanted more than where it finished, I sincerely hope the author will follow with another case for them solve, as I didn't like their transfer!

I can't recommend this book highly enough, absolutely gripping!
