5.0 out of 5 stars Intolerance is everywhere

In anticipation of her new release “Shamed” Linda Castillo has released a novella to whet our appetites and help ease us back into the world of Kate Burkholder and Painter’s Mill.

Bullies and small-mindedness can be found anywhere and this is what leads to a harrowing night in the life of Noah Kline. He is a good kid, walking home alone after taking a girl to a school dance. This is Noah’s rumspringa where he is allowed the freedom to experience the world outside of the confines of his Amish household. Little did he know that there are those who believe that he should stay with his own kind.

What he didn’t expect was the car that came barreling toward him and then chased him into a field. The next morning, while clinging to life, the story behind the attack is told revealing that intolerance is everywhere, even in the small town of Painter’s Mill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheriff Burkholder deals with teen passion and bullies

Short, sweet and to the point -- suspenseful! A trip back to Amish country and Sheriff Burkholder has a hit and run case on her hands -- and a bunch of teenagers in the middle of it all. A quick glimpse of Tomasetti who always rides to Kate's rescue is always a treat. I love this series and am always eagerly awaiting the next book from Linda Castillo.

Not a thing wrong with this short novella -- except it's over way too soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Up to Linda’s standard

As always, Linda hits her mark. Love the Chief Burkholder series, short story (as this is), or long. Poor Chief seems to get targeted in every story, but it keeps it interesting. I’ve waited many long months for this to release, and it was worth the anticipation. Linda is one of my top favorite authors, and it’s a short list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and satisfying read

I love these novellas by Linda Castillo since they're easy and quick to read, you get the whole story in about an hour, and you know that a new novel is coming soon!

This novella takes on a Rumspringa relationship between an Amish young man, Noah Kline, and an English young woman, Ashley Hodges. Someone doesn't like it and decides to do something about it.

Burkholder and her team chase down the leads, at some points, literally, and the clues lead them to the perpetrator.

Quick and satisfying read!

This is a short story about Chief of Police Kate Burkholder. She receives a late night call informing her an unconscious teenager has been found in a field. The boy is Amish and has started seeing a girl at the high school in town who is not.
This is a tale of prejudice and kids who bully. Good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An action filled novella

I usually will not read novellas but I will tell you a novella by Linda Castillo is a must read.

Right from the beginning you are drawn into the story.
Nathan, who is Amish and in his rumspringa is dating Ashley a local high school girl. One night when Nathan is walking home a car tries to kill him. Kate Burkholder is called and as Nathan is transported to the hospital unconscious, Kate and her department are looking for clues as to how and why this happened. The story is developed enough that the reader’s attention is held. Miss Castillo is a master at writing even a short story. I definitely recommend this short story. You will not be disappointed.

Fast paced right from the first page. Who would run down a young Amish man? Noah is left for dead and Chief Burkholder must figure why a young man on rumspringa is lying in a coma after a date with an English girl.

Great read that had me glued to my chair! Can’t wait to dive into the next! Best part of getting a novella and a novel close together, I save both for a binge!

This series never gets old. Love the character development so much!

5.0 out of 5 stars She is getting better at the short stories

Usually I can figure out who the killer is in her past short stories with no problem. But the last two had me baffled. This one was.no exception. I was back and forth with each suspect and there are quiet a few here. I am glad to see she is learning the HARD craft of short story writing and short story mystery is even harder. It was fun can't wait for the new Katie Burkholder novel in July!
