On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she's vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That's why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.

Xavier del Torro, the right-hand man of the Nightkind King, is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can't ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier's world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers - both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past.

It started off well enough before stalling out. Neither one of these characters was strong enough to carry a book. Pia and Dragos would have been bored to tears.

Weakest of the series

I loved every minute of this book. I loved the love story and the fight. Worth reading again!

Loved it!!

It was so refreshing to have characters who weren't constantly bickering or slamming one another up against walls. That kind of friction can be good fun too, but it was so nice to get a break from that type of story. This one and Oracle's Moon are my favorites for that very reason. They are both lighter on the over the top, screaming conflicts between the hero and heroine. The heroines in both this one and Oracle's Moon were still feisty, just not the raging lunatics I've read in some stories. (I barely made it through Kinked. I almost quit when she brought up a strap-on. Seriously...too much.) I loved Xavier's character. He put me in the mind of Antonio Banderas, which could never be a bad thing to me.

Anyway... By far the best one in my opinion. My only complaint is that it felt too short. I don't know if that's just because I was enjoying it so much or if it actually was a little shorter. And I was disappointed that the epilogue was dedicated to a character from the next book instead of a peek into their future. I think that's the first in this series to jump to another character in the final chapter. From the sound of things the next one is going to be more face scratching and slamming up against walls. Can't complain too much though since I'm still listening. ;)

Great narrator. Great book. Keep them coming!

By far the most romantic of the series...

I was so used to the hot untamed emotions of the Were that the cold sneaky passion of the vamps surprised me. All in all, though, it was a great story.

starts more slowly than the prior books

I loved this book. The interesting thing was how the passion was more realistic and down to earth. I really got into the story. I'm biting my nails for the next book. HOT HOT HOT!

Vampire, take me away!

I really really liked this book and would give it 4.5 stars if we could fraction them. I adore Thea Harrison's writing, her mind and the whole culture she has created with the Elder Races books. Her Xavier del Toro, introduced in earlier Elder Races books, is the epitome of smooth, ruthless, graceful and intelligent. My ONLY beef with Xavier was his being rather small (5'10")...for some reason, I like my alphas as big as their alphaness. But, what a terrific character he is. Ditto Tess...only issue there was that I kept wanting to hear more of her past as it obviously played a huge role in her becoming the strong, driven and emotionally challenged woman she was. It's a very smart story and written with the grace, style, and intelligence that is her hallmark. When you add the brilliance of Sophie Eastlake's narration, the result is quite lovely. Ms Eastlake's Xavier is spot on and you lose yourself in HIM rather than her reading him. The inflection the accent and the tonation is all Xavier. I am actually now listening to it for the second time JUST to hear him fall in love with her and vice versa. It's a keeper.

Another great narration by Sophie Eastlake. When I originally read this book, I felt the heroine was a little whiny, which didn't come across quite as much in the audiobook. I love the hero in this book even more this time around. A great addition to Ms. Harrison's Elder Races series.

Liked it better the second time

I was disappointed that this book indicated it was Book 7 of Elder Races but not a previous primary character made an appearance. Dragos was never mentioned. Once I began referring to this book in my mind as Elder Races World I was able to enjoy the book. But I am confused why this book is part of the series, hopefully, the next book will clarify this confusion. The book did end with somewhat of a cliff hanger, ugh!

Loved the narrator. The story was a bit drawn out, but still very enjoyable. I did get a little annoyed with Tess. I don't know why but I really didn't like her until almost the end. Thea Harrison builds a very interesting world and is a master wordsmith, her descriptions are amazing, Sophie Eastlake brings the story to life and I just lay in the dark llistening and iving in their world.

Good story,
