The novel opens with a narrator telling in a detached, reportage-like style that gradually warms as the story progresses. While the first half meticulously builds tension through careful world-building, and bodily-fluid-erupting detail, the introduction of Mr. Silver marks a dramatic shift in pacing. The storyline serves up less and less opportunities for any reader voyeurism, trading rich detail for otherworldly and secondary character-focused progression toward an abrupt cliffhanger ending. But maybe that’s the point? Maybe we, the reader, are being deliberately iced out like one overzealous lover in the book—did we overestimate our worth to Laila? Despite its uneven pacing, the novel's blend of supernatural elements and compelling mystery creates an unforgettable, if frustrating culmination to the reading experience.
