Child requests this book all the time and delights in the raucous, and largely goodhearted, adventures of the field-trippers.

The historic hotel in Boonsboro has endured war and peace, the changing of hands, and even rumored hauntings. Now it’s getting a major face-lift from the Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother. As the architect in the family, Beckett’s social life consists mostly of talking shop over pizza and beer. But there’s another project he’s got his eye on: the girl he’s been waiting to kiss since he was sixteen.

What would have made The Next Always better?

A different narrator

If you’ve listened to books by Nora Roberts before, how does this one compare?

I enjoy Nora Roberts, but I will never listen to this narrator again. I read the text version instead. It wasn't one of her best works, but I couldn't get through more than a chapter with the narrator. He set my teeth on edge.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

In a book that is predominantly about women, having a narrator whose falsetto makes the women seem simpering and ridiculous is offensive and unpleasant. There are other male narrators who can alter their voice to distinguish the different characters without having that negative effect.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Next Always?

She relies a bit too much on sociopaths of one variety or another. I could have done without that bit of plot entirely.
