In 1934, the body of a beautiful, but poor young woman was found alongside a riverbank near The Depot. Beaten to a pulp, only recognizable by a tattoo on her ankle, and yet, days after the discovery, the story all but disappears. Eighty years later, locals claim The Depot is haunted. But in all the years homicide detective Mark Waters has visited the abandoned1800s train station turned restaurant, he's never seen proof. Until now.

romance, law-enforcement, ghosts, mystery, supernatural, suspense

Good police work, nice romance, twisty with lots of red herrings, all too believable characters (good, bad, and ghostly), in a very interesting read. The main ghosts are related to each other and to one of the main characters. The detective thinks he's gone nutty as he doesn't believe in ghosts, yet he is apparently the only one who can see them. Good plot, and even when you think you've figured it out, it still surprises. The publisher's blurb is not quite helpful, and no spoilers here.
Michelle Babb becomes one with the characters and really makes all the difference in reader enjoyment!

Roxie spent many memorable summers in her aunt's hometown, but now she's skipped out of her law practice and is the proud owner of a coffee house that will really thrive come tourist season. But when the bookstore owner is found murdered and the sheriff seems more inclined to accuse Aunt Maxi instead of investigating, Roxie steps in. Lots of twists and red herrings abound, but there's lots more to this story.
Madeline Mrozek is the remarkable narrator here who keeps her voices straight and makes a good read even better!

I love cozy mysteries because the amateur sleuth can be a real investigator without hindrance or condemnation by professional law enforcement. That's how you can tell that it's fiction. And in this case, the eleven year old cold case gets solved without anyone else getting killed. The due diligence is done and documented now that the remains of the missing sister have been found and Sabrina and her family have the first answer. Lots of twists and red herrings, complete with suspense, in a good plot that nails the killer by the end.
Once again, Lisa Beacom gives a fine narration.

What's a nice girl like Miss Juliet Shelby doing at a place like Lord Deveril's ballroom? With her shy demeanor, she's a total stranger to the dance floor and a source of mockery for the ton. So imagine her surprise when Deveril gallantly comes to her defense - and offers to teach her to dance! Juliet can hardly believe the most handsome bachelor in London would notice her, until he takes her in his arms and sets her heart ablaze. Lord Alec Deveril has never felt such a spark of attraction for an unmarried lady before. Unlike the "fashionable" ladies he's accustomed to, Juliet possesses a generous spirit, a fiery intelligence, and a secret.

Not fluff! Sure, it's a romance and all that but it delves into some pretty ugly family stuff and more. Juliet is beleaguered by her mother and a nasty debutante and made to feel ashamed of the "leg injury" that happened to her which resulted in treatment all too familiar to war victims. The characters are all too clearly depicted and can be easily recognized as some people today. Juliet is a strong woman and overcomes a lot, Alec carries a lot of emotional baggage and guilt courtesy of other people, but they overcome. An excellent read!
Unfortunately it's narrated by the over dramatic Anne Flosnik, but don't let that spoil it for you as she is absolutely terrific doing the nasty characters.

I thought to have this for a distraction for a visiting middleschooler, but it grabbed me and I loved it! It's gory enough for the boys, but way more fun! I agree with others who enjoy the comparison to the Jack Sparrow movies, but here we get to exercise imagination a whole lot more. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers, but that can't begin to prepare you for all the suspense and fun. Well worth reading and rereading!
I got mine on sale via Book Gorilla and took the audio option. Daniel F Purcell did a fine job of narration without being over dramatic.

Being part hyena in Grayslake is almost as bad as it gets, the only thing worse is being sheltered by an Abrams in the clan leader's home by the youngest brother who has an even bigger load of baggage than the rest. She's been very poor and suffered in other ways as well, but in spite of everything they begin to heal each other. A very moving read.

There's a huge difference between spousal abuse and good natured swats to the behind, and this story makes that perfectly clear. True, it's her best friend who married the physically abusive mayor, but Lauren kept trying to rescue her. As a human, she was a real problem for the shifter Sheriff who hated humans for most of his life only to discover that this one is his mate! The story moves fast and holds interest, but it is a HEA, so we do know the ending. I really loved it!
