Author Chris Pike's debut novel Unexpected World is a gritty and compelling survival tale about human courage and steadfast determination to live, to endure, and to persevere against all odds. Assistant District Attorney Dillon Stockdale is on the phone with his daughter when an EMP obliterates the entire electrical grid of the United States. Anything relying on a computer is fried, including the plane his daughter is on.

Russ and Anne Mathews made their escape from their home, along with family, friends, and new friends they made along the way. Now, they must build a new life for themselves at the Warren farm, without the luxury of electricity and very few traces of the 21st century. The problem: there are a lot of people who didn't prepare for something like this, and some of those people will stop at nothing to take what the group has, by whatever means necessary.

I mostly enjoyed this. Maybe being from the South, I'm more sensitive to this, but the Tennessee accent seemed over done in the narrator. I do like the main character, she is trying to survive in tough times and does well.

As a prepper, Grayson Rowan was prepared for almost anything...anything other than being totally alone when the sh*t hits the fan. While he sat back and watched the US rattle swords with Korea, play chicken with Russia, and strong-arm China, he felt sure if the lights went out that he and his family would be ready and safe. What he wasn't prepared for was his family not being home if it ever happened. Olivia Rowan is with her sisters, Gabby and Emma, on a girls-only trip to Myrtle Beach. Graysie Rowan, a freshman at university, just wants to go home.

Great story. Characters spread out hundreds of miles to get to home. Rookie -and veteran- mistakes are made. A plan usually barely survives until the problem occurs with enough variables to sink that plan. Peppers are just more ready for SHTF than sheeple, but they still fall asleep, get hungry, forget to think ahead. I enjoyed both the story, and this narrator.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

They have stocked up on supplies to survive any kind of event they can think of that may occur to disrupt life as they know it. As usual Nora Roberts writes a great story full of rich characters, friendship, and family. We met these characters in book one, but this time we get to know them better because it is their story. We also get to hear from other characters from book one, the town people we met before and the characters that will star in book three. This narrator is better than book one, although I woulld prefer all three in a series was done by the same person, it is a good thing in this case that it is a different person.
