Publisher's summary

Return to the opulent world of Elfhame, filled with intrigue, betrayal, and dangerous desires, with this first book of a captivating new duology from the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black.

A runaway queen. A reluctant prince. And a quest that may destroy them both.

Eight years have passed since the Battle of the Serpent. But in the icy north, Lady Nore of the Court of Teeth has reclaimed the Ice Needle Citadel. There, she is using an ancient relic to create monsters of stick and snow who will do her bidding and exact her revenge.

Suren, child queen of the Court of Teeth, and the one person with power over her mother, fled to the human world. There, she lives feral in the woods. Lonely, and still haunted by the merciless torments she endured in the Court of Teeth, she bides her time by releasing mortals from foolish bargains. She believes herself forgotten until the storm hag, Bogdana, chases her through the night streets. Suren is saved by none other than Prince Oak, heir to Elfhame, to whom she was once promised in marriage and who she has resented for years.

Now seventeen, Oak is charming, beautiful, and manipulative. He’s on a mission that will lead him into the north, and he wants Suren’s help. But if she agrees, it will mean guarding her heart against the boy she once knew and a prince she cannot trust, as well as confronting all the horrors she thought she left behind.

Character history...

It's pronounced Low-rye-o-pea, not Larry-O-pea... this drove me absolutely crazy... It's a shame, I really tried to love this book, but it got the back ground wrong. Oak should be able to pronounce his birth mothers name...

Amazing narration!

The narrator did such a good job and Holly Black once again killed it, as well.

Why did you leave me like this Holly?!

Another amazing story by a Fairy queen, I love everything Holly black writes. I can't believe she did us like that with that cliff hammer ending I hope she writes like the wind.

I didn’t know I was waiting for this!

First of all, I want to say that I was very worried that I wouldn’t like this narrator as much but she was WONDERFUL. Except for a few names that were pronounced differently (that really didn’t take long to adjust to) everything else was the same from series one and she did an excellent job with Oak.

The story is a beautiful continuation of this universe. Not only do we get a look into things that were happening during the first series, but we get to see Oak grown into the prince he should be. It is very satisfying to see that his personality is a healthy mix of his family. Don’t expect to see a lot of Jurdan in this book, but Holly Black does an excellent job of weaving a new tale and new characters that you will love just as much. Though (in my opinion) a little darker than the first, I think this series has the potential to be just as captivating as the first.

Spoilers ahead!
I didn’t know I needed a childhood friends trope in Folk of the Air but I DID. Holly Black laid it out beautifully. It is incredibly satisfying to see the man Oak is growing into - someone with a personality akin to Locke but with the heart of Cardan and skills from his family. And Ren’s backstory??? I had no idea?? It’s making me feel really bad for writing her off like Vivi in series 1.

Anyway, I’m staggering after the ending, and I know this one just came out, but I’m chomping at the bit (or bridle, as it were) for the next one.

It's Holly Black. Need I say more?

Ok. I will.
Incredible story! I hated turning it off. I'm contemplating listening again just so I can catch anything I missed the first time around.
