Publisher's summary

Named a Most Anticipated book of 2024 by TIME ∙ The New York Times ∙ Goodreads ∙ Entertainment Weekly ∙ Today.com ∙ Paste ∙ SheReads ∙ BookPage ∙ Woman's World ∙ The Nerd Daily and more!

A shimmering, joyful new novel about a pair of opposites with the wrong thing in common, from #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry.

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra.

Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, without friends or family but with a dream job as a children’s librarian (that barely pays the bills), and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak.

Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads—Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?

But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex…right?

Critic reviews

“When romance novelist Emily Henry releases a new book, it’s nothing short of a literary event. And this spring’s Funny Story—which has already been named one of the most anticipated books of 2024 by everyone from the New York Times to the Today show—is sure to be no exception... this sumptuous novel is Henry at her very best.”—Bustle

“Bestseller Henry takes on fake-dating in this equally poignant and charming tale of love after loss… Henry perfectly balances sorrow and discord with love and humor, and romance fans will appreciate watching the growth of the characters’ relationships and of Daphne as a person. This is a heartwarming take on summer love.”—Publishers Weekly

Editorial Review

Emily Henry’s best yet
April showers bring … another new novel from Emily Henry. For the fifth year in a row, Henry warms up the spring season with a heartfelt romance set in a dreamy locale featuring an unlikely pair. Daphne’s fiancé dumps her for his childhood best friend, Petra. Daphne decides to move in with Petra’s jilted ex, Miles, fake dating each other to make the new couple jealous—but it quickly turns into something more. Henry’s knack for writing relatable characters while balancing romantic love with relationships between friends and siblings adds even more joy to this beautiful story. Julia Whelan delivers another flawless performance, bringing the unforgettable cast of Funny Story to life. I think this one might be Henry’s best yet! —Margaret H., Audible Editor

Funny Story is a Wonderful Read

I never smiled so much. I have new favorite characters—Daphne and Miles are fantastic, and Julia is sweet. Julia Whelan did a great job narrating. I highly recommend it.

Could not have loved this more!

I’m a huge EH fan, so I started this book knowing that I would probably be a fan, but I didn’t think it would hit me so hard. I’m trying to think of something I didn’t love, and can’t come up with anything. The characters, the setting, the story, the secondary characters, all were wonderful.

Julia Whalen is a gift

Julia is always a treat to listen to. I absolutely loved her performance of this incredible book. Emily Henry has done it again! Every time I think she can’t possibly write something better, she releases another book. Myles and Daphne were electric and perfection. Through broken childhoods, horrible breakups, and the trials and tribulations of adulthood, they came together in the more beautiful way. Their story made me laugh, cry, and swoon. This is my new favorite book by Emily!!

The best kind of love story is when you also fall in love with your whole life

Emily Henry has such an incredible talent to not just write a love story about two people, but she writes love stories with a heartbeat throughout them that makes every character feel real and meaningful.

I love found family stories and I loved how Daphne and Miles found friendship during heartbreak. I loved Daphne’s character and the emotional growth she experiences. She doesn’t just fall in love with Miles, she falls in love with her life and herself. She heals and grows and becomes stronger because she finally accepts that she is enough as she is.

And the BEST part is that this happens in a messy, funny way. In between the amazing banter, awkward moments, tense sexy moments, and incredibly beautifully sad moments, Daphne creates her own love story. Which is such a great mirror to how life really is.

I am always full of emotions when I end an Emily Henry book because she makes you feel like you were just hugged right when you needed it.

An incredible book.

She’s done it again.

Every time and I do mean EVERY TIME I listen to an Emily Henry book I have the same thought.

She’s done it again.

Every one of her books is fun, witty and heartfelt. Each story makes me laugh and swoon as of on queue with a studio production. I sometimes think that these books can’t be as laced with crack as I think they are until I get the next one in my hand and it has the exact same effect on me. The premise for Funny Story probably appealed to me the least out of all her books but I had to give it a try. Thank god I did. I love Miles and Daphne. They’re both so relatable and their story was so fun to listen to.

Speaking of listening… Julia Whelan. I think she could make listening to a doctoral thesis entertaining. There’s people that read books and there’s people that tell a story. You already know where she lands.

All in all this book was a great read and I can’t wait for the next one.

Even more emotional gripping then her last book!

So far, every book she releases is better than the last. “Funny Story” kept me on the edge on my seat, and emotionally invested at every turn. I love how Emily Henry took with this beautifully orchestrated story of a woman beginning again, and reminded us that we’re all human and it’s okay to feel like our life is a mess sometimes. What matters is the people in it and what you do with it.

Everything.

If saying I literally hate when an Emily Henry book ends and that I hate when Julia Whalen says “The End” is any indication of how much I loved this, then that’s how much I loved it. It’s comfort. It’s the spicy cup of Chai latte that Daphne drinks, it’s the Gingerbread smell of Miles … it’s that good! Read /listen to it, now!

What a fantastic book!

I loved the pace of this book and the narration was perfect. The characters have me hoping that this becomes a series. It was the perfect listen on a rainy day in Seattle.
