I am thoroughly hooked on this series of audiobooks. It is so charming, and it makes me feel happy. This short audiobook (almost 3 hours) is "..Show More »;clean" - no sex, just kissing. There not even a mention of sex, and the two primary characters are virgins in their 20's. Somehow, this situation feels totally plausible while listening to this story.
There was barely any mention of God, so I do not classify it as a Christian romance, although Christian romance readers would probably like it. I would call it a sweet contemporary romance with a fairy tale plot.
This Cinderella story has a man (Ethan) as the downtrodden, self-sacrificing good guy who is badgered by his two ungrateful younger stepbrothers. Ethan's parents had died when he was young. Then, when he was 19, his unpleasant stepmother died, and he volunteered to become guardian to his 9- and 10-year-old stepbrothers, delaying his dream of becoming a veterinarian. He meets Mia, a princess of a small European kingdom. She is visiting her sister Alessandra, who is engaged to an ex-Navy SEAL who runs a ranch in Texas (see Book 1). Mia has been unlucky in love and does not want to rush into a relationship with the wrong man again. Both Mia and Ethan are so likeable and have admirable characteristics.
Although this audiobook is not perfect, I was highly entertained by it. There are short bits of awkward wording, and the writing might be a bit too simplistic sometimes. However, this story really cheered me up. Mia and Ethan were so sweet together!
The narrator was pretty good. To my Southern ears, her Texas accents seemed very authentic. She did not attempt to give the European princess a European accent, but I was able to ignore that snafu after a short time. She was passable at men's voices. She occasionally made the book sound a little too hokey with how she sometimes pauses and overemphasizes certain words in a sentence. Still, I think the narrator has a very pleasant voice, and I was mostly pleased by her performance.
This series is best listened to in order because there are a couple of story arcs that stretch beyond each novella. Also, some characters from Book 1 get a couple of chapters in this Book 2, which I enjoyed. I also liked how the last scene of the audiobook is a teaser for what will happen in the next novella. In addition, a short excerpt from Book 3 is included at the end.
I love this contemporary twist on Cinderella with cowboys and princesses. Lacy Williams has made such a charming series of audiobooks that I can't wait to listen to the rest of them. Books 1 & 2 are going in my list of beloved audiobooks that put a smile on my face.
I received a free copy from the author, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
If you want an "easy to listen" audiobook that doesn't put a damper on your day or leave you with high levels of anxiety, then this is th..Show More »e series for you!! I would rate it PG, and all of the books so far (I've listened to 1-3) would be suitable for teenagers through adults. These books written by Lacy Williams and narrated by Lara Asmundson all end happily, which leaves you with a feeling of joy, rather than some I have read that left me confused, sad, or grossed out! There are no sex scenes (always just a kiss), and there is no cussing/swearing. The plot flows nicely and opens with a conflict that draws the reader/listener in right away. As you could guess, someone in each story falls in love fairly quickly (because the stories are only around 3 hours). However, if I met these people, I'd fall in love too! :-) For now, I'll have to continue on with my semi-boring life and hope for the best. Haha!
Although it would be a better experience for the listener to start at the beginning of the series, it is not necessary. I, however, am happy I started at the beginning because my favorite couple from Book 1, also makes their appearance in Books 2 and 3 so far! This is because all of the characters are connected together, even though it isn't always told how they are connected, right away. In case you don't start at the beginning with Book 1, a bit of background is provided throughout each story to avoid any confusion as to why the characters make certain decisions or act in specific ways. As you listen, you, too, will have your favorite couple. As an added perk, the author gives you instructions on how to get a free surprise/bonus at the end of this book, too...so listen all the way through! So nice of her! Of all the books I have listened to, these are the ones that I have had an author extend an invitation (of sorts) to the readers. Thank you for that!!
I rate this series 5 stars for these reasons: -Appeals to a large audience (you do not need to listen with your teen daughter supervising her as she listens....I teach high school and I would not say this if I didn't mean it) -They are of shorter length (great for an afternoon listen...even though I like to spread it out so I can enjoy it longer) -The bonus at the end of the book...again, listen all the way to end for your gift! -At the end of each book, there is a chapter available for the listener for the next book in the series (to see if you want to buy that one...which so far has been the reason I keep coming back for more!) -The writing flows nicely and the characters are relatable (even though some of them are of Royalty, the others are everyday people, like me) -The narrator is awesome! Her voice is perfect...her tone, inflection, speed, and pronunciation are right on. She does a fantastic job. In some books I've listened to, I don't think the voice of the narrator matches what the characters would sound like...she does! I can't think of anyone I would rather listen to more than her for this series. Great job!
I plan to continue with this series and hope you give it a chance, too. This is not my usual genre (I am a lover of mysteries and non-fiction), but I am thrilled I gave this series a chance! I think you, too, will feel the same. I have never met the author or narrator, but if I had the chance, I would tell them both great job and thank you for introducing me to the world of romance! :-) If you made it to the end of my review (I know it's long....it's the teacher in me!!), thanks for reading and I hope it helped! :-)
The Beastly Princess is the 4th book in the Cowboy Fairytales Series by Lacy Williams. I have listened from the beginning, so this is also my 4th list..Show More »en, as well as my 4th review, from the series. Lara Admundson is the narrator for the books, and she does a great job! Her voice is controlled, she keeps a good pace, has nice volume, and even sounds Princess-like to me with her sweet-sounding voice. :-)
You can read my other reviews on Audible regarding this series if you want to hear more about each book, the author, and the narrator individually. For fear of sounding repetitive, this one will not be as long as the other three reviews....ok so I just finished writing my review and came back to this paragraph. I swear I tried to not make it so long...I failed...oopsie! :-)
I think in one of my earlier reviews I stated that you wouldn't necessarily have to start at the beginning of the series to get an idea of what was going on. I feel differently now, being that this is the 4th book. You will want to have some background before listening to The Beastly Princess, in my opinion. Knowing who everyone is and having a better understanding of the families will prevent you from feeling lost when a character is introduced. I may have been a bit confused if I read this one without reading the others because I wouldn't have the same appreciation of all of the characters and their relationships with one another. Plus, you will want to start at the beginning anyway because books in a series are always better when you do!!
Each book is short enough to listen in one sitting, if you choose to do so. This is what I like most about them, actually. They are short, sweet, and make you feel good at the end because they all have HEA endings. Another thing I like that the author does is gives the listener a glimpse into the next book. This is what has kept me reading the series! She pulls you in just enough for you to get hooked, and then....well, then it ends and I go buy the next one! :-) Also at the end of each book she includes a secret "surprise" for you, so make sure you listen all the way through to the end of the story!
I recommend this clean series for teens through adults. They are well written and narrated, and I'm sure you will enjoy them all as much as I have! Thanks for reading my review! :-)
