After the other reviews I was hesitant to get this but I REALLY liked it! The narrators both capture the characters, the thoughts, the emotions, the ..Show More »tone. Cornelia is at first surprisng, and yet once you get to know her, the narrator sounds just like you think Cornelia should. And Claire's narrator, not a child at all, portrays the thoughts and feeling perfectly. There are some very poignant thoughts and the narrators really do bring to life the main characters. The interepretation of the male voices was not as great (especially Tao) but they're passable. The story is simple and yes, predictable, but the thoughts and the observations throughout are interesting, sweet, and touching and, I thought, worth the experience.
This book reads like the audio version of "Desperate Housewives", with its benign suburban setting, the musical, gossipy tone of the narrato..Show More »r and the intermittent soundtrack that transitioned the scenes. The story was pleasant enough but everything was just too perfect and the author never really effected the transition of the shallow, loathsome Piper Truitt into a caring individual with any real depth. In short, everything in this book was just too "beautiful and wondrous", with its fairy tale narrator, to be believed.
The overall story was okay. However, the narrator read most of the book in Penn's breathy/ whiny voice which was so annoying I had to turn the book of..Show More »f on several occassions just to get a break from it. I realize it is hard to get the true voice of the narrator in the short sample snipets we can listen to before purchasing but had I known the voice was going to be this bad throughout the 13+ hour book, I would have passed.
