A very enjoyable audiobook with great characters and an exciting storyline. Em Fuller lives in Austin Valley, which on the surface appears to be an id..Show More »eal society for Dream Traveler's. All Dream Traveler's develop additional gifts once they reach puberty, except for the Defects, of which Em is one. She and her fellow defects must endure painful injections to encourage the development of their special gifts, but Em discovers the dark truth behind these injections. Her world crashes down around her and with the help of her sister and friends she escapes and the fight to survive begins! This book is a great start to The Reverians series. It's well written and draws you in from the very beginning with likeable characters that one can empathize with, and a plot that captures your imagination. I especially enjoyed the humour of Em's obliviousness, her tenacious nature and strength of character. This story has romance, intrigue, originality and some great twists and turns. If you loved the Divergent or Hunger Games type of books then you will love this story too. The narrator did an excellent job of breathing life into the characters, the humour, sadness, pain, frustration and want comes across loud and clear. Her voice depicts both male and females very well and she manages to portray individual personalities and attitudes excellently. I look forward to listening to the next in the series. A brilliant, heartbreaking sequel to Defects. There is so much to say about this story I really don't know where to start. This audiobook tore my hear..Show More »t out and left it bleeding on the ground, both the writing and the narration portrayed perfectly the emotions felt by the characters, be it fear, sorrow, regret or acceptance of the inevitable. It not only made me cry once, but twice! The fight to overthrow Vider and stop the Defect conversation program continues to feature prominently in the storyline, it is suspenseful and action packed, but for me it is the relationships of the character that made this book standout. The characterization is excellent and the surprising and devastating twist at the end of the book leaves you breathless. As the story progresses you can not help but become even more invested in these characters lives, empathizing and associating with them. I love Nona's intelligence and humour, Ren's sarcasm, Zack's willingness to sacrifice and put his friends needs first, and of course, Em and Rouge's love. Their relationship is not a flash in the pan romance, as in most YA books, but rather it is one based on long term friendship and respect. You feel for them and want then to beat Vider, have a HEA and live out their lives in that little cottage in the woods. The complicated and often dysfunctional family relationships also adds depth to the book, Em's Farther and her sister, Dee, continue to become darker characters, betraying and manipulating at every turn. Rogues abusive farther, Vider, persists in his quest for power and in his need to destroy those who could challenge him, including Em and Rogue. On the other hand there is Tutu, Nona and, to some degree, Ren who are willing to put themselves at risk in order to support/help Em and Rogue. Rebels is a suspenseful and heart wrenching read with a great plot, surprising twists and a very well chosen narrator that is able to bring the characters to life and give them individual personalities. I can not wait for the next in the series. I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The last book in the Reverends series is a brilliant end to a great story. It is a story of hope, perseverance and the willingness to not give up. The..Show More » rebels are trying to make the rebellion work but things are not going fast enough. Em has some nerve wracking encounters but her strength and perseverance helps her prevail and move her life forward. Zack's quiet strength and unconditional love shines in this book and I enjoyed how his characters story developed. I love Ren's snarky personality, I think he is becoming my favourite character and look forward to finding out more about him in his own novella, Ren. The amazingly descriptive writing of the author transports you the Reverends world, making you experience their joys, fears and woes right along with the characters and once again the narrator captured the personalities, action and emotions beautifully. What can I say, this book made me cry yet again! After having my heart torn out by Rebels, this book managed to staunch the bleeding with the love, selfless beauty and sentiment in this book. It's a fast paced, captivating read and the great characterization, coupled with an amazing storyline, make this a must read/listen to series. I can not wait to discover more of the Dream Travellers world in The Lucidites. I received this audiobook from the author in exchange for an honest review.
