This has to be one of the worst novels I've had the misfortune encountering. Bad enough to compel me to write my second book review ever, and my first..Show More » negative one.
Idiotic, stilted, and hokey plot, supremely shallow character development, and lukewarm narrating make this a torture device worthy of Gitmo. To be fair, the narrator may have been just as bored desperate to be done with it as I, so I will not hold it against her too much. Unlike the narrator, and to my relief, I was not obligated to endure the tedium.
Thankfully the story saved this audiobook. The narration added nothing and, in fact, detracted from the enjoyment.
As in the previous book, ..Show More »the narrator threw in American accents where they certainly didn't belong. Quite distracting. When a reader makes one stop and think "what the heck?" instead of absorbing the story it's unfair to the author. This happens frequently by this narrator.
And the author could use a better editor. There were several times "could care less" was used. Bad! Then she popped in a "couldn't care less" so someone finally noticed. Fingernails on a blackboard to me. And, I may be wrong on this but why is the wife of a Viscount referred to as a Countess? Shouldn't she be a Viscountess?
The characters were interesting. I would have liked more with young James. As I said, the story was decent and it was worth listening to. I think it may have been better to read it, though. I will listen to the next book only because I've already bought it.
