This is my second purchase of a Patricia Rice novel. I haven't been a romance reader since I was 13 years old. However, I chose to read the first boo..Show More »k because it was narrated by Simon Prebble (que the music🎶 - I'm in love with this hunka-hunka of burning narrator) and I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that one novel is the only one of her books that he's done. Ah well, I'll try another. This narrator did....fine (he's no Prebble) and the story was almost as good as the first one (would have been GREAT ....if.....well, you know.....).
Here's the skinny. I love "magic" part of these Magic Series books. I love that it centers around the Matriarchal. I love that, yes the women are beautiful ,fey and besotted but they are also SMART. I love that the men are all dickheads but also eventually find themselves made more whole, by the love of a good woman. Okay, Okay.....I SAID OKAY! The men are all tall, hard of muscle 😉, and virile. Let's NOT, for the love of the old gods and the new ones, forget VIRILE! All in all? It's 9, 10 or 11 hours of pure escapism. And look, you're listening to it on Audiable - you can't be embarrassed by the OVER-THE-TOP cheesy art on the book jacket. As long as you use earbuds or headphones, you can tell your husband it's a book about how to be a better wife, your priest - it's a book about how to use God's gifts, your children - a book about family loyalties, but tell your girlfriends about the "hard of muscle" part.
A very entertaining and enjoyable historical romp.
This was a slightly different story than the typical 'rogue' type story line - it has all the elements tho, but more. Lady Lucinda's paintings are th..Show More »ought to show the past, present or future but, unaware by her, one of her paintings actually turns out to depict Sir Trevelyan a handsome ex pirate, who has been trying to come back into society to find a wife, and the painting is thought to portray him as the murderer of his cousin who is missing and presumed dead. So he is furious and tries to find Lady Lucinda to throttle her.... but she is one step ahead of him and she has other plans then romance, mistaken identity, magic and humour all ensue.
