After reading the Legend of the Blue eyes trilogy I was a little weary of how a completely different series would be but this like her (Kristin McMich..Show More »ael) first series, it hooked me in from the very beginning! Absolutely enthralled by it & can't wait to read the next in the series!
In Chrysoprase, the story picks up where Carnelian left off. Mari just returned to her own time only to discover that the Goddess had sent her mother ..Show More »back to her own time, and Seth did not return with her to the present. I guess that rescue mission failed! #epicfail. Lets start from the beginning shall we...
Mari is an 18-year-old girl in her first year of college in MN. She meets and falls in love with Seth, aka the “Edward Cullen” of all guys, and learns that he is a time traveler. When Seth has to return to his own time, Mari decides that this is unacceptable and finds out how to follow him in the past and bring him back. Little did Mari know that her own mother is a part of the same time period as Seth, and in fact even knows him! I'm jumping ahead, so sorry. The story is so entangled with every part of everything that it's hard not to reveal one thing! Returning to recap, that was book one in a nutshell. Book two is where you get your mind blown.
Now that Mari knows Seth did not return with her, and knows who her mother really is, she turns to the only person she can, Ty. I'm not sure why Ty made it back but I guess someone had to! So Mari and Ty begin planning their return to the past to bring Seth and her mother back. They have no clue how to time travel back to a past that far back, nor how to bring someone with them. Right here is where the story takes a total U-Turn and begins the mind blow. For the rest of the story, it's all action, drama, and danger! I still don't have the bigger picture that I know is there. With all great stories, you never are able to figure out the ending, right?
New characters were introduced, some friendly, some not so friendly. With the new characters came new story lines, new layers to the existing one, which brought me to a whole new level of enrapturement. That's right, I'm making up words, lol! Mari is introduced to her mother's sister Juni, and her son Prince Saru and his evil wife Saska. Mari learns quickly that no one can be trusted in her mother's time, but instead of keeping her head down and her mouth shut, she does quite the opposite which brings her to the predicament she is currently in. Sometimes the past is a shock and disgusts me, which is why I prefer to not read historical books, but the realness of the evil men did in the past is what got my heart pumping, and peaked my curiosity to stay glued to the story and find out what was going to happen next. It was like watching a train wreck, you can't help yourself. It is a total rush, I loved every part of it!
Hollie Jackson delivers another riveting performance! Hollie narrated the first book, Carnelian as well. Her tone reflects Mari's character so well, I can't imagine anyone else as Mari. Excellent job Hollie, you score a well deserved 5 Star Rating! *Audiobook provided by the author for an honest review*
Aventurine is the third installment of the Chalcedony Chronicles Series by B. Kristin McMichael, where time travel and the adventure of a lifetime is ..Show More »just a blink of an eye away! After having read books one and two, where the action had a steady pace and the budding romance between Mari and Seth began and blossomed, I believe this book pales in comparison. I did enjoy this book, but the delivery was at a snails pace. The teenage angst, and how Logan pulled Mari along so damn slow was painful at times. I honestly believe this series could have done with one less book in it! The amount of information that was released could have been summed up in a few chapters in one of the other books. The story begins where the last book left off. Mari gets stuck in the past while her boyfriend Seth and her mother go on into the future. Logan appears to late to help, like he was supposed to, and ends up being the one Mari was set up to marry, (in the past). After we get through the explanation of that whole thing, we are introduced to a new character, Ky, like Ty but with a K. The funny thing about this dudes name is the similarity to Ty. There is a Ty in this story and he is her best friend, and at some point she says “my Ty”, get it, haha!! I obviously went delirious during the story because of the ridiculousness of the naive Mari. Her young and naive self questioned EVERYTHING all the time throughout the entire book! If it wasn't for loving the previous books, and NEEDING to know how this story ends, I would have had a really hard time finishing it! Thank the stars above that the ending produced a significant change in the story that propels it forward! I am so looking forward (now) to listening to the fourth book, Chrysocolla.
Narrator Review Hollie Jackson once again narrates for McMichael. I have truly enjoyed her voice from day one! She is doing an excellent job, and I hope she continues to deliver a great performance with this series.

Previously on Aventurine, book 3... Mari and Ky escape to the past from Logan and into the arms of Mari's father. What an ending right?! That whole en..Show More »tire story was Logan tricking Mari into reconnecting with him, and trapping her, essentially making her his prisoner. All the while his own son, Ky, is trying to help her find a way out and correct the changes Logan made repeatedly to the past. Will they be able to learn how to correct what Logan has done and stop him once and for all? It's the million dollar question!
Oh my bleeping Goddess! This book took a full 180 from the previous one, and landed a standing ovation! The back and forth, twists and turns with the past present and future, had me second guessing what the hell was going on the entire time! It finally dawned on me what this reminded me of, that movie with Ashton Kutcher, The Butterfly Effect! Every time Mari didn't end up staying with him, Logan would go back in the past and change something to try and force the outcome into his favor. Psycho much? Despite the fact that this evil little bastard knew Mari was in love with and destined to be with Seth, he still tried, like the little engine that could... it was sad, and pathetic.
I loved the fact that once Mari was back in the past she was reunited with her mother, and father (the one she never met and didn't even know who he was!), Seth, Ty, and Dee, yay! Together they were a force to be reckoned with. Ky was also with them, since once he chose Mari's side he couldn't be caught by Logan. Now that all the players are in position, the story adds a twist, with a dash of danger that I was not expecting. I love how it all came together in such an adrenaline rush, and ended just the right way. I'm sad to see the end, but happy about how it did. This series is a definite must read for all YA Fantasy book lovers!
Narrator Review Hollie Jackson narrates the last installment to this epic fantasy! I loved Hollie from Carnelian, Book 1 of the Chalcedony Chronicles. She is a really talented narrator, and I hope to hear from her again very soon!
