Charlie Harris is a part time collage librarian in Mississippi. He's a recent widower with a pet Maine Coon Cat named, Diesel, who walks on a leash e..Show More »verywhere with Charlie. Charlie also boards a couple of students from the college.
When a former classmate, Godfrey Priest, comes to town to promote his latest bestselling book, not everyone is pleased with his visit. Godfrey is a bit of an arrogant bastard who has hurt and angered a number of people. He's also coming to claim a son who is rooming with Charlie. But someone has killed Godfrey in his hotel before he can give his talk. Now Charlie finds himself researching more than old college documents so he can help find the killer before his friends become the prime suspects.
This story revolves a great deal around the cat, who seems a bit like a recovery service cat. Diesel seemed to always know when someone needed extra attention and love. This aspect of the story was very subtle and well done, which I really liked. On the other hand, I found it a bit difficult to believer that everyone, and all places, appreciated having a cat around, especially food places. That being said, this story was captivating and intriguing. The well developed characters and theme of book writing made this a fun mystery.
The narration was well done, but since the story was written in a first person male voice, I might have preferred a male narration. Though I liked this audio version well enough that I definitely plan to listen to the next book in this fun series too.
This is book two of the Cat in the Stacks Mysteries. In this story retired librarian Charlie Harris and Maine Coon cat Diesel are hired by a wealthy ..Show More »man, James DeLacorte, to catalog his library of rare books. DeLacorte thinks someone is stealing from his collection and wants Charlie to determine how many books have disappeared.
Chief Deputy Kenosha Berry, from book one, arrives when Charlie discovers DeLacorte has been murdered. Berry asks for Charlie’s help because of the rare books. Charlie’s son, Sean, an attorney has quit his job in Texas and is now staying with Charlie for awhile. Charlie and Diesel are on the case.
The book is well written and easy to read. There is little action but lots of suspense. This is a book of words and mental deduction. James is an excellent story teller. Erin Bennett does an excellent job narrating the book.
This is book seven in the “Cat in the Stacks” series. I have previously read book one and two in the series. This appears to be a series one does no..Show More »t have to read in order as each book stands on its own.
Our protagonist is Charlie Harris and his Main Coon cat Diesel. Charlie is a retired librarian who had returned to his hometown Athena, Mississippi, after his wife died. He is working part-time at his alumni, Athena College, as an archivist. Diesel comes to work with Charlie and is enjoyed by fellow workers and students. The library director suddenly quits and an interim director is appointed from the accounting department. Oscar Reilly proceeds to alienate everyone including Charlie after he bans Diesel from the library. Then Reilly and others are murdered and Diesel and Charlie are on the hunt for the killer or killers. The college president appoints Charlie the new interim library director and now someone is trying to kill him.
The book is well written. The author does a great job of weaving the story and characters into an exciting story. James is a gifted storyteller. I picked up on one piece of information, that Mississippi does not register guns. Have not yet checked this out to see if it is a true fact or not. But in the story a gun could not be traced to the owner because there was no registration required. I am always on the lookout for bits of unusual information. This is a fun read and I learn more about Maine Coon cats with each book.
Erin Bennett does a great job narrating the book. She is a well known voice over artists and audiobook narrator.
I enjoy this series; however it appears there was a problem with this recording. It appears there is 1 to 2pages missing from chapter 27 and 1 page mi..Show More »ssing from the last chapter. Randy's broken arm just shows up. In the last chapter, it jumps from night to the next day with no explanation.
