A fun story with a times a little too much going on to make this a great listen. I enjoy the main character for the most part. I didn't enjoy the mean..Show More »ing of life and self reflection bits at the end. That kind of ruined the whole goofy story for me. The whole story had kind of Stephanie Plum (Janet Evanovich) feeling but not nearly as well written.
Books from this series are all reasonably entertaining as long as you don't pay too much attention. My complaints first: The format is so similar to ..Show More »the Stephanie Plum books that it can elicit eye rolls. The narrator on this one is different from the other books. The narration is mostly very good... but, she only does three voices: Sophie, Rosie and then everyone else is Greek, even if they are Hispanic or Jewish.
That being said, all of the books are fast paced and amusing and this is the best of the lot.
I love the Sofie Metropolis series, I really do, but this one was just kind of "eh". I think the narrator used on the previous books did such a great..Show More » job (especially with the accents) but this one was not very good. Everytime she tried to read Rosie, I cringed -- instead of getting the plucky Puerto Rican's personality, we got something like a Russian/Oriental-esque accent. Don't even get me started on Jake. UGH. Please bring back the original narrator and continue to write these fun books. They are very entertaining, and I want to "see" what happens to Sofie, sans Allyson Ryan.
I read, and enjoyed, all of the first 4 Sofie Metropolis stories. So much so that, when Love Bites did not come out in audio format I waited...and wai..Show More »ted. When it finally came out on Audible I happily surrendered one of my credits to listen. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with how bland and boring it was. The series has a faint hint of a Greek Stephanie Plum but without the laugh-out-loud moments that make the Plum series so enjoyable. I am a fan of supernatural fiction, so the vampire angle is intriguing, but the series really needs some sort of boost. Even the ending was boring, to the point where I was sort of glad it was over. I may or may not read Queen's Ransom, but I doubt I will sacrifice another credit for it. Maybe on Kindle...
In spite of all that, Vanessa Johansson did a very nice job narrating this story.
