This is a prequel to Lonesome Dove with a young Corporal Call and Augustus. It is well written and superbly narrated. I could listen to Will Patten re..Show More »cite the phone book and enjoy it. It is also a good book but I could not give it five stars because it is so depressing. You are supposed to win some, lose some in life but you should not lose them all. If you do not mind a depressing story and you like oaters then this is for you.
I have now listened to Lonesome Dove, Dead Man's Walk and Comanche Moon and hated that there were no more books to listen to. I am not a fan of Weste..Show More »rns normally but the character development, story lines and overall writing is amazing. I can't recommend these three books enough. The only thing I question is if I would have listened to them in a different order than how they were published; starting with the prequels first and ending with Lonesome Dove but in any order they are excellent reading/listening. The only negative I can think of is each book was narrated by a different person and I prefer one voice as the when listening to a series.
I was thoroughly engaged in this story within minutes. The characters are so finely drawn and their individual stories, while often sad are unique and..Show More » interesting. But what I REALLY loved was the reading by Lee Horsley. --I've never been moved to find a fan page of a narrator but he does an amazing job of individualizing and bringing alive these characters. Whether you are big on westerns or not you will LOVE this audible book!
Could he read any slower?? I am a big Larry McMurtry fan but after trying to listen for a few hours I had to delete this book because, aside from the ..Show More »story going nowhere, the reader was driving me crazy. I even increased the speed on my iPod but it didn't help. At the risk of sounding mean, I will avoid any other books narrated by this reader.
