This is a prequel to Lonesome Dove with a young Corporal Call and Augustus. It is well written and superbly narrated. I could listen to Will Patten re..Show More »cite the phone book and enjoy it. It is also a good book but I could not give it five stars because it is so depressing. You are supposed to win some, lose some in life but you should not lose them all. If you do not mind a depressing story and you like oaters then this is for you.
At the end of Part 1, Cal is cold, hungry and talking to someone, and then suddenly he's eating stew. This didn't make any sense to me. I got the book..Show More » from the library and discovered that the audio book had skipped 20 pages -- it skipped from page 33 to 54. I did some more checking and found a different audio version published by Recorded Books. That version is 30.5 hours long -- 7 hours longer! The Simon and Schuster version is abridged and misrepresented as unabridged.
I also thought the narrator was terrible. He tries to achieve dramatic affect by putting great emphasis on the last word of a sentence and dragging out its pronunciation. "The two rode close together as they had through their years as RAAANGERS." The narrator of the first book, Dead Man's Walk, was much better.
I have a 55 minute each way commute to work every day and have listened to dozens and dozens of audio books. Lonesome Dove is by far the best book I h..Show More »ave ever listened to. I found myself sitting in the garage after arriving at home, listening to this tale of a western cattle drive from Texas to Montana and not able to turn the CD player off. I laughed and cried at the characters and events in this 36 hour long epic and was depressed for days when it was all over. I didn't want it to end! I bought the book and watched the DVD but the audio version is by far the best. Be prepared to put aside everything else for awhile because once you start this book you won't be able to shut it off.
Could he read any slower?? I am a big Larry McMurtry fan but after trying to listen for a few hours I had to delete this book because, aside from the ..Show More »story going nowhere, the reader was driving me crazy. I even increased the speed on my iPod but it didn't help. At the risk of sounding mean, I will avoid any other books narrated by this reader.
