I'll start with the negative, which is pretty simple and straightforward. The crime and the motive are far fetched (which actually do not actually re..Show More »veal themselves until late in the book).
If you can get past that and accept the premise of the crime, then the book is put together quite nicely. The characters are interesting, and overall the book is entertaining.
The narrator did a fine job. If you don't mind hard to follow names, cities and the accents, you'll enjoy the listen!
I am not sure I'll seek out another Adler-Olsen book. I gave this one a try as a change of pace. I've been trying Norway, Sweden and Denmark based authors lately as I really liked the Stieg Larrson books, and have enjoyed the diversion - This one is one of the better listens of the bunch so far. Overall recommended!
One of the best crime novels I have ever experienced. This can be favorably compared to the best of Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke, John Sanford a..Show More »nd Henning Mankell. A powerful, emotional ending that will remain with me.
I am a big fan of John Nesbo novels, and having listened to them all had to find an alternative. I read the reviews and this novel, book 3, in the ser..Show More »ies got the highest rating, so I started there. I did not feel like I missed anything from previous novels, so I feel I can safely backtrack in the listening order. Set in Stockholm, it fits well in the genre of Nordic serial killer books (Nesbo, Girl with Dragon Tattoo, etc.) . If you liked any of those books, you will like this and vice versa. So if you have not read Nesbo, you can listen to this series and then move on to him. That way you will almost a dozen books to listen to.
This is the Book "The Purity of Vengeance" Renamed
This has happened to me previously. Audible brings another narrator's version of the story online, changes the title for the North American audience, ..Show More »and I end up buying it, unaware that I have already listened to the novel. I am a bit torqued over this because now I have to go through the hassle of returning the book. I have purchased 1257 audio books and I want to be able to rely on Audible to get this stuff right the first time.
Buy the "Purity of Vengeance," narrated by Graeme Malcom…he is a much more compelling narrator.
Revenge is a personal favorite in mystery novels. The abuses this particular woman suffered through had me crying out for justice. But unlike many rev..Show More »enge stories this one has some real twists that makes for an emotional roller coaster throughout the novel.
Department Q is simply great entertainment. Carl Mork and Assad have a charisma and synergy that makes you want see them go at it for years to come. I've yet to find anyone close to Nesbo's Harry Hole series, but Department Q is still a 5 star listen in my book.rr
This book has ALREADY been offered under the title The Marco Effect. The story is great, and I love this author. So I was very excited to see a new ..Show More »title!! But sadly, it is new in title alone. I was so disappointed. If you haven't heard book 5, then definitely get this. But if you're an Adler-Olsen fan just check that you haven't already purchased book 5. (This isn't the first time I've run into this so of thing with audio books.)
I surely hope this is not the end of Dept. Q. I have a great fondness for all the characters, and after listening to the first minutes of this newest..Show More » story, I suddenly realized how much I had missed them. Often after two or three books is a series, I become bored or disenchanted with the main characters, but not so with Dept. Q! Still eager for more!
