I listened to this book later than many of the other reviewers so I had the opportunity to read the reviews before I listened. Because the reviews s..Show More »eemed mixed I didn't know what to expect. As anyone who reads my reviews knows.......I love historical romances, especially ones with Highlanders, so I eventually would have gotten to this one.
The Chief is a well written story and is a cross between historical fiction and a harlequin romance. History is intertwined nicely within the romantic story along with action, spies and a mystery. At times this book was predictable but it didn't take away any delightful moments of the story.
A few negative reviews of this book unfairly compared it to 'The Outlander' and I don't understand why. 'The Chief' is not paranormal and not 33 hours long. It is an entertaining romantic historical romance set in Scotland and that's where the comparison ends.
Overall, it was quite nice to escape to Scotland to visit an overbearing, stubborn, handsome highland chief and his curious, beautiful dreamer of a lass. Hope to visit them again in book 2.
Monica McCarty's main characters actually did live in the times she has so thoroughly brought to life. Little is known of the actual details of their..Show More » lives, of course, but she has masterfully woven the history into her stories and her characters' personas.
Here is the story of Erik MacSorley, one member of Robert, the Bruce's elite secret army. Half Viking, half Gael, and entirely too charming and handsome, Hawk is one of the most renowned seafarers of his time. His highly secret mission gets off to a very unpropitious start when a young woman, celebrating an ancient pagan ritual, accidently stumbles upon his meeting with the Irish mercenaries he is recruiting to Robert's army. When he does the only thing he can to save her, it very nearly destroys both him and his mission.
For one thing I liked Robert McNab much better as the voice of the Highland Guard. The character Helen irritated me.She was too tedious for me. I am f..Show More »ascinated by Scottish history and novels that are historically accurate.
I honestly thought that listening to a romance novel would be awful and incredibly awkward. However I've been driving a lot recently to visit my fianc..Show More Ȏ in another state and needed something more than music to keep me awake so I gave this a try.
Thankfully this book was amazing and wonderful!! The story is fun and the narrator was easy to listen to. I found myself enjoying this novel more than I had the others in series when I simply read them. Not to mention I found myself making more excuses to listen, so that I could find out what happened next in the story!
I will be purchasing more of the highland guard novels from audible in the future and I would highly recommend this one to anyone looking for their next romance novel!
Fantastic journey into romance and Robert Bruce's Scotland. Great twists and an agonizing/vindicating journey to the HEA. Great read if you have been ..Show More »bored with historical romances and need a really good one!
