For the sake of transparency (so you know what your spending your credit on) I lined up 5 things I think you should know before you buy this book. ..Show More »/> 1. The main character Abby Abernathy (nicknamed 'Pigeon' by her love interest Travis 'Mad Dog' Maddox) is eighteen going on nineteen. She's just started out college with her best friend America (Mer).
2. The story is set in college but the dynamics between the students (and also between the main characters) seems more like high school. In other words: it's juvenile. If you're not a (very) young adult, you might end up rolling your eyes even more than Abby Abernathy does.
3. Travis Maddox has a temper (he's quite volatile) and is physically violent. Not against his 'Pigeon' or their friends, mind you. But pretty much against everyone else. Blood splatters quite often in this book.
4. Spoiler alert!: Somewhere past midway the book takes a turn and the cast goes to Vegas.
5. I should have stopped at the Vegas turn, but really I can't not mention this: Travis, the hero, sports tribal art tattoo's. And later he adds a new tattoo that declares his love for 'Pigeon'. In Hebrew. I'm not saying anything else. Zip.
I didn't hate it. This novel is quite entertaining at times. But the storyline is all over the place (see 4) and overall it's very, very young adult.
If you read all of the above and you're curious. Go ahead. Buy it. I dare you. Just don't say I didn't warn you!
OMGOOODNESS! How do you write the exact same story... better than the first from another POV...!!! This is really hard to do and McGuire nailed it... ..Show More »
I was so nervous about this book b/c I didn't want my original impression of Travis Maddox to change, not one bit... WOW... This book is like.... it is like....
Ok...first... I was scared some scenes from BD would be redone from Travis POV, which I felt were already done from his POV in BD... but you know what... McGuire apparently felt that way too, because not one of those scenes where redone...
Second... I was so wanting to hear the other side of the virgin/smex/leaving scene... When Travis smashed up everything in BD... OMG! SO much better now that I have see it from Travis POV... WOW... WOW.., I loved the silent rage... it was like Travis was raging on the outside... going all crazy, smashin up the house... but inside... he is complete numb, silent... dead... quite... just broken...! OMG! Who writes like that...? McGuire I will read anything you write!
Third... Beautiful Disaster (BD) is how the outside world sees Travis Maddox...very tough, brutally honest and a "Maddog" right... But this book... is like the inner turmoil of that very ruff shell... but deep down...Travis is soooo very innocent... OMG! WOW WOW... and how he loves Abby! His Pigeon...
And the epilogue! WHAT! YESSSSS! I always wondered what Travis and Pigeon life would be like after college... Soooo cool!!!
*Extra*: Remember in BD when America said Travis and Shep talk... Well boy do they... all thier conversations are exposed~!!! LOVED IT!!!
DO NOT MISS THIS!!!! Not only are the Narrators Outstanding for Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster, if it's possible, they're even better in the..Show More » performance of A Beautiful Wedding. I never want it to end. The story and pacing are excellent, and I will have to listen to Travis and Pidge again in the other books. Jamie McGuire has hit her "Sweet Spot" in her story of these two...while I've read her other books...nothing affects me or hits home with me like Travis and Pidge - and I'd love for her to write a sequel about a Travis, PIdge, their lives and perhaps what goes on with the next brother and the next...doesn't have to be a murder or huge crisis, Jamie writes real life very well. As usual with my "treasured" books, I own the ebook, hardcover and Audible - reading and listening add different dimensions and reveal different things about the same story - I Love Love. With these two, the depth of feeling is never corny, you'll feel a warmth, a glimpse of the character and heart it takes to deserve what they have. They truly become One.
