I was terribly dissapointed by this "cliche"ridden book. In an effort to build suspense, the author over-uses red herrings to the point that he create..Show More »s characters just to be a red herring, then they dissapear. Coincidences abound. Seems like everybody in the book drives the same car as the killer, several people meet not just some, but all of the characteristics of the killer. To top it all, if the police need to be late to the scene to build suspense, traffic jams magically appear. The killer abducts girls in broad daylight, in busy areas, and nobody ever sees him. There is even a "dark and stormy night". The police are so inept that I found myself wanting to yell: "Don't lay down your weapon before you go into the dark basement'you idiot!" Not believable.
A serial killer and a disillusioned cop. This could have dropped into a predictable formula, but the author injects some complexity with a liberal spr..Show More »inkling of red herrings. Perhaps the author tries a little too hard, as the storyline got a little confusing at times, and a few loose ends remained unresolved. Scott Brick does his usual first-class narrative. Not only would he turn a phone book into a thriller, but he'd make you rush out to buy the next edition!
I absolutely love the narrator Scott Brick because he brings the story to life. I love the characters in this book-you actually meet them in previous ..Show More »books. In Merciless, there is suspense, drama, action, comedy, dry humor and a feeling of knowing the characters. I am definately looking forward to his future books and hope that Scott Brick will be the narrator of them too.
I enjoyed this book and loved Scott Brick's narration. The style is very similar to Montanari's other works. He did a great job developing a complex v..Show More »illian. I did feel like he left too many loose ends in a continued effort to add depth to Byrne and Balzano. Pieces were introduced, such as the meeting with the ex-wife, and then not discussed further. Overall though, a good read.
I would 100% listen to this novel again. It was as I said, totally awesome. Twists at ever turn, and you are guessing until the end. The narrator in m..Show More »y opinion is also very good-- he actually does the voices of the characters pleasingly AND when he speaks as the criminals, he is haunting!
