This was my first Neal Asher story; the authors style is very good, an interesting mix of science fiction, action adventure, space opera, humour, and ..Show More »horror.
The reader is also excellent, his wide range of voices is veery good. The choice of rural english accents may seem odd to american listeners but works very well. Sniper in particular is very well characterised.
The only real failure - as noted by other listeners - is the odd choice of the editor to not leave audible gaps when the character viewpoints change. Its not too distracting as it quickly becomes apparent, but still could do with changing.
This book has led me to listen go/read most of Neal Ashers novels. While they're not in any way mold breaking, they are ripping good yarns, entertaining, and with sufficient intellectual and emotional content to satisfy most readers.
I've now got to the end of the trilogy, and it has proved an interesting voyage. Personally I'd like to hear more of Sniper and 13 adventures, Mr Asher... more please!
Some reviews opined that the book was difficult to get into or difficult to follow the story line and there were times that I agreed. In the whole of ..Show More »you want a rewarding ecosystem then you have to put up with a bit of background. This story was a wonderful way to do this. After the untimely passing of Iain M. Banks I have finally found an author that can craft a universe. I will miss The Culture, but Mr Asher has provided a rich universe to discover along with some very undertaking Minds. Room101, Penny Royal, Thirteen, not to mention the incorrigible Sniper.
Although I somewhat agree with the other reviewer that it was certainly difficult at times to keep everything straight. I do love John Lee's narratio..Show More »n work, maybe they had an intern do the editing and mix work.
Besides that though, this book is a bit of a departure from the previous two books in that it takes placed almost entirely off planet. The characters, the plot, and the settings are all done very well.
Although this book may not change your life, it is leaps and bounds above the normal rubbish Sci-fi literature.I would defiinitely recommend it, but be aware that the editing is a bit funky.
