I liked this book, but liked the first one better. The story seemed to drone on in some spots but is still very good all the same. I'm also not a huge..Show More » fan of the female reader--she is too measured (slow) for my tastes. But this is still a really good book by all rights.

I'm really looking forward for the third one in the trilogy to come out!

I enjoyed the Tales of the Otori trilogy. The story has good pacing, interesting characters, and just a bit of magic that doesn't put it too far into ..Show More »the fantasy genre.

Of the three books, I thought the last, Brilliance of the Moon, was the weakest. Good action to be sure, but the book tried to cover too much ground. There was some plot resolution by Deus Ex Machina. Perhaps my preference for the first book is that I first learn about a strange new world and characters that live larger than life. By the third book, it's less about showing us this strange world and more about tying up loose ends.

First off, I loved and was totally enthralled in books 1-3 mostly because the narration of all three books were the same people and great acting. They..Show More » kept you glued, conscious and focused. The switching from the male perspective to the female was great. Then came the anticipated fourth book and they (for some reason) changed the narration characters....AWFUL! I barely got through the book, the Male narrator was bland, monotone and had no excitement whatsoever then the Female voice was almost intolerable boring especially when she tried to do a males voice OMG!!!
The book itself was good but a bit redundant at times, kind of sporadic and drawn out. Again I really think that changing the narration characters was a grave choice and was disappointing, but nevertheless I had to listen to all 19 hours because I invested so much time in the later books that I needed the conclusion.

Over all I give this book a 3 star.

Sometim..Show More »es prequels released after a succesful trilogy seem to be an attempt by the other and publisher to make some extra cash off the series' popularity (i.e. Starwars etc). Not so here. This book was a great story about Otori Shigeru and the events leading up to his discovery of Otori Takeo. Shigeru makes for a fantastic main subject and he deserved to be the focus of his own story. I have been inspired to continue listening to the stories all over again.
