Eisler writes competently and his plots are interesting enough to carry a reader along nicely. Unfortunately once you have read one of the Rain novel..Show More »s, the next one sounds entirely familiar with little in the way of further character development. Essentially that adds up to extremely detailed descriptions of the martial arts techniques Rain uses to dispatch his usually faceless adversaries and extensive bouts of introspection about how difficult it is to have a normal relationship while you are cutting a lethal swath through the world of international intrigue.

There is no nuance here and not much humanity, but if you are primarily looking for action and interesting settings, John Rain may be worth your time and credit. In addition there might be a special attraction here for martial arts aficionados, and Nishii does a nice job of reading the books.

This book was a real pleasure, a book you can't put down, not simply because it is full of action, or because the story is interesting, or because the characters were well developed and true to life, but for all of these reasons and many more. This book was simply a joy to read. I have relatives who are probably not spies, but they work in the American intelligence community and because of my conversations with them I?m fairly certain the author?s background working in the CIA has added greatly to the accuracy of his fiction. His descriptions of the orient also are very accurate and reading this book brought back many pleasant memories of Bangkok. He captures the true flavor of the city where the smell of garbage is overpowered by the sweet smell of flowers or the enticing aroma of wonderful food that pervades the city. Bangkok has always reminded me of Dickens's opening line in A Tale of Two Cities, "It was the best of times, it the worst of times ...", but reminiscence of the pleasures of Bangkok, the exotic places, the happy people, and the wonderful food, overpowers my memories of the worst aspects of Bangkok. The author captures this dichotomy as I remember it. You will not regret buying this book. I give it my highest rating, without qualification or reservation. The narrater is also outstanding.

just finished listening to all three books written by Barry Eisler, involving the assassin Rain. They all hold your attention from page one. You can’..Show More »t wait to find out how the story gets resolved. And yet, you don’t want it to end, because you enjoy the ride so much.

I do recommend reading the books in the order they were written. While it’s not crucial, there are story elements that are given away in the later books about the earlier ones. While it wouldn’t exactly spoil it, it would be better not to know anything before it happens.

The order is: “Killing Rain,” then “The Last Assassin” and finally “Requiem for an Assassin.”

It’s a different reader on the last one, Scott Brick. Though he’s excellent as usual, it took an hour or so to get used to, because Michael McConnohie’s reading brought the characters so vividly to life in his own way.

I highly recommend these books for suspense, plot and characters. It’s hard to describe, but you are just highly interested the whole time, and you never think, “Why would they do that?” Very intelligent and well-crafted. This applies equally to all three books!

Mr. Eisler has instantly moved to the top my list as an author. Mr. Brick’s narration was also equal to the task by adding just enough and not trying improve a well crafted work. I found myself sitting in the car after reaching my destination just to listen to this wonderful book. I highly recommend it. Take a listen.

Fast pace book which is read by the author. Loved the book. Love the author.

I did rate the peformance with 4 stars to indicate that he ..Show More »is not really professional reader. He performs many of the characters very well but a few of them it gets confusing which character is speaking. I might also say I graded very hard...

This is a continuation of the John Rain character which started in the book Rain Fall. This book stands on it's own, but I recommend that your start with the first book.
