The overall story and naration was quite good, I like the retrieval artist novels so took a chance. The characters are nice and if you're looking for ..Show More »some adventure you'll find it.
What makes me stop at three out of five is the weird choice of driving part of the plot with very advanced interstellar and then limiting 'dives' by running out of air in 60 minutes. Even today's EVAs on ISS and Shuttle missions last for 7 or 8 hours. All in all, it feels like the book was written while learning to scuba dive.
I've listened to 20+ scifi books on Audible and this is only the second that I could not finish. I'm a big fan of Rusch's other works (particularly ..Show More »the Retrieval Artist series), but this book has been a disappointment . The main character is VERY irritating which is only made worse by the fact that most of the story is written in first person. The narrator actually does a good job of portraying the quirky antisocial characteristics of the protagonist (which in some ways is unfortunate).
I do like the premise of "archaeology in space" and there is considerable potential for this to be a great series (assuming the protagonist is replaced). If you like this genre, check out Jack McDevitt's books as the concept is similar but the characters are more relatable.
