i've read a handful of the jeeves/wooster books, a couple of the blandings adventures, plus a miscellaneous story or two, and it may just be possible ..Show More »that mr. woodhouse only has a dozen or so story lines and it soesn't matter a bit. he is fantastic.

this is my first 'listen' to one of his books and it went quite well (although people look at you out of the corners of their respective eyes when you burst out laughing in public places for no apparent reason, dash it all!)

the reader was good, maybe very good. occasionally he mixed a characer or two, and his impression of an american accent is, well, enlightening.

at some point i think i am just going to go to the very beginning of wodehouse's work and read them straight through.

as usual, format two worked fine for me.

It was something to the effect that anyone attempting to discover a moral to one of his stories should be shot...Show More » I think that is an excellent moral be applied to this and all P.G. Woodhouse stories. There are no life lessons to gleaned, no overarching principles just goofiness and fun. Bertie Wooster is just about the most pathetic bumbler in the most dysfunctional family ever. He stumbles into and out of one mishap into another like the character in the movie "Arthur" with Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. Naturally, it is the butler Jeeves, the only adult, who time after time pulls the bacon from fire. Nicolas Coster gives full scope for that stiff upper class British humor to take over. It was a joy to listen to him.

P.G. Wodehouse's writing style full of his us..Show More »ual wit and comedy. There is no one quite like him for imagery, and humour.

Once again, Bertie Wooster gets into trouble from all sorts of directions, and once again, Jeeves comes to the rescue.

Jonathan Cecil is absolutely BRILLIANT in his reading of this classic.

Jonathan Cecil is now one of my favourite audio talents. His voice is pleasant and versatile. His rendition of each separate character in the book is very clear and consistent. One feels like one is listening to a radio-play, presented by several actors, rather than just by the one person.

I truly appreciate this series of P.G. Wodehouse audio books. They are so engaging.

I love P.G. Wodehouse and this is one of my favorites of his books and Cecil is spot-on as the reader. Ordinarily I enjoy Frederick Davidson's rendit..Show More »ions but for this title he cannot beat Cecil. In fact, I downloaded this version even though I had already downloaded the Davidson version. After many listens, the telling of the two deaf men on a train joke (and subsequent explanations for the aunts) still slays me.

One of the things I like most about Wodehouse books is that everyone's always talking about money - having it, losing it, marrying for it, borrowing i..Show More »t - in great detail. The result is that you end up learning a lot about the economic conditions of the time in which the stories are set. And that's one of the best aspects of this book.

'Ring for Jeeves' is set in post-WWII Britain, when the term 'impoverished nobility' was more applicable than ever before: the economy was a mess, the pound had been devalued, and even titled aristocrats - who formerly had lived on 'private income' or income from large country estates - had to start getting real jobs and selling their 15-bedroom castles to Americans, who were the only ones with enough money to handle the upkeep.

The male members of the leisure class are forced to take jobs at Harrods-like department stores, and the 'delicately nurtured' female members are becoming more independent and career-minded: Hilarity ensues!

In many ways, the story feels like a Blandings Castle novel onto which Jeeves has been grafted. It's not entirely successful (apparently wrote the play first, and then turned it into a book, and I think the retrofitting is apparent) but overall it's a decent story, has some good moments of humor, and provides a great insight into the upper classes in the late 40s and early 50s.

I think this book is one of the best in the series - right up there with "Code of the Woosters." I've been working my way through the entire set of J..Show More »eeves and Wooster books and have been really enjoying Jonathan Cecil's readings. Some titles had to be picked up elsewhere to get Cecil's version. This book (a.k.a. "Jeeves in the Offing" as British title) is only available with Carmichael doing this title and he or F. Davidson doing the British title. I chose this because the audio sample of Davidson doing Aunt Dahlia's voice was "just wrong" as I heard it. I was glad I chose this. Carmichael's reading grew on me as the book progressed. His Aunt Dahlia was even more bombastic than Cecil's - which IS one of her charms, after all. Carmichael does have his flaws, though. He doesn't differentiate much between people's voices in quick conversations and he gave Bertie a small speech impediment (I missed that if it was mentioned in a previous book) AND his Jeeves doesn't have all the "gravity" I'm used to - but then, Jeeves isn't in this book as much as others. Overall, it's a good choice if they don't do a version by Cecil someday in the future. FYI - Wikipedia has a very helpful list of the entire series in publication order under the "Jeeves" heading. This book comes later in the entire series.

I found it difficult to tell who was speaking and when the speaker changed, and I kept wishing that it was Martin Jarvis or Jonathan Cecil reading, instead. It was heavy going, to quote Mr. Wodehouse.....

I'd give it 5 stars if Jarvis or Cecil was reading.

I am hooked on these P.G. Wodehouse titles, and this one is very light and entertaining, as anticipated. Wonderful narration!

Just wanted to say the reader is excellent and the writing superb. Master of the art of absurdity, Wodehouse lives up to his reputation.

The narration sounds exemplary so far, but I must complain that the six+ hours of audio is divided into ten "Chapters" that don't cue to the stories. ..Show More » There should be 13 short stories, it would be nice if there were 13 "Chapters" and they each cued to the beginning of a story.
