Dallas finishes her gift giving to friends and colleagues, which further develops the growing character of Dallas. This is definitely a quick read. I would encourage anyone new to the series to read Holiday in Death immediately before reading this one. Although Robb fills in the blanks in all of her books so that you can read them out of order, this book is more enjoyable after Holiday in Death.

JD Robb has developed ..Show More »a world of complex characters that the reader begins to think of as close personal friends. The plot line is good, taking enough twists to keep you guessing. Dallas is a very believable character and one in which many women who are strong, capable people sick and tired of stupidity can easily relate to. The love scenes get a little tedious for me, but nevertheless are signature pieces of JD Robb. They don't ruin the plot in the least. Susan Erickson is at her best as the reader and the voices are crisp and identifiable. This is well worth buying.

The story lines are always very interesting and some of the humorous lines have me laughing out loud. Somehow, J.D. Robb is able to make the love making between her and Roark different in every book and a wonderful experience without seeming tawdry or vulgar, even though at times their banter can be; however, it is usually very humorous. Keep writing them J.D. I just finished the latest, Kindred in Death, and as usual the narration was top notch.

Witness in Death stays with the In Death program. We learn more about the characters and get to solve a mystery. Like all formula books, the reader or listener knows what to expect, knows Eve, with Roarke and the others help, will catch the murderer and peace will reign until the next book. Works for me. I've read them all, now listening to them all and enjoying every moment.

I enjoy Nora Roberts/J D Robb's writing and I love Ms. Ericksen's narration. Please, don't listen to the negative comments. Listen to one of the books and make the decision yourself. I don't think you will regret it.

Dialog is typically witty JD Robb style with the sense of humor that has some bite to it. Susan Erickson has managed to maintain the integrity of the voices, which is nice after having read a few where she was somewhat off. I'm not sure why the length was so short, but still it was a good read. Readers who have read several Eve Dallas novels will wonder if they have read the love scenes before. They have -- the writing of those segments is very similar to other novels in the series. But they don't take up too much of the novel. JD Robb pretty much sticks to the plot in this one.

The main problem with this book and from what I gather the last two books, only one of which I have heard (Book 13), is that there was a dramatic change in Peabody's voice and changes in other voices. Since I have heard other books later in the series and earlier in the series, I know that this change does not persist, for which I am grateful, since I had gotten used to hearing certain voices and I get one or two books every month and listen to them several times.
I thought this book was a break in many ways. It was not as convoluted and complex, but then I listened to it on vacation and maybe had more time to pay attention. It was a good summer listen!

Although the In Death numbering scheme makes it look as if this book is the sequel to Imitation in Death, it's not. Between the two, Roberts wrote a h..Show More »alf Roberts/half Robb novel called Remember When, a two part book set half in present day and half in 2050s NYC. Only the second half is about Dallas, and it's available standalone under the title Big Jack. It's a very nice story, so go back and get it if you missed it.

Now, about this book...

I'm listening to the series in order, and Divided is my favorite since Witness. There is real tension between Eve and Roarke as he is torn between his desire to protect her "bad Roarke" style and his respect for the law through her.

There is, as a negative review noted, a higher percentage of dialog to action than in some other books, but if you're into series fiction it's really all about the characters. This book has some great Roarke and Dallas character development, funny and touching scenes with the still pregnant Mavis, and some interesting glimpses into the workings of the mysterious Roarke Enterprises.

Program your auto chef for coffee and danish, put on your favorite Freestone album, and enjoy.

Part 1 is a decent story in itself. It's just the prequel to Big Jack and has nothing to do with Eve and the rest of the gang. So, I've now purchased the same story twice.

And, as always, Robb advances the personal lives of her characters just a little bit more. Although reading the series in order makes it a bit more enjoyable, Robb continues to do a nice job of filling in a new reader without using a lot of filler. It doesn't distract a tried and true reader, yet lets a new reader in on the past. Susan Erickson has also seemed to return 100% to the original voices of the characters, which is a welcome relief to the seasoned Robb listener.

I have to give it up to Susan Ericksen ( the narrator) she really makes these stories real. ( I especillay got a treat with Roarke's relatives being in town). (Susan has that Irish accent down).
I have tried saving money and reading a couple of the books but it is trully not the same without the voices that Susan gives us.
Do yourself a favor start with the 1st one you will not be disappointed.

The reader does a good job with voices, accents, etc. Many of the characters didn't sound as I expected. Peabody is far more goofy in the audio and McNab is so very dorky. I'd also love Roarke's voice to be more manly. But she does a fantastic job with the accent and these mild concerns didn't stop me from ordering Kindred In Death, the newest JD Robb, from audible. The second listen was even better as I knew what to expect re: Peabody and McNab.

Here's the thing - it's bad. Really, really bad. Maybe Roberts had the flu when she wrote it. Maybe Ericksen caught it from her. But it stinks. The plot is laughable. Peabody, Meara, Roark and, it pains me to write this, even Dallas act so stupid you'd swear they couldn't solve a glide cart stickup.

So, all my fellow fans, go ahead and buy it. It's only three hours long, which means it's cheap, so do yourself a favor and spend the $10 in cash to buy it. That way, once you've finished it and need to get the bad taste out of your mouth, you'll still have a credit left to get a GOOD book.

I'm off to Born in Death with high hopes...

This was one of my very favorites I think because Roark really got to be totally involved and see how the cops worked from the inside. KEEP WRITING, KEEP RECORDING! They are wonderful. For those who said some of the books, the voices were off. Be quiet. Just keep listening and all gets back on track. I NEVER had trouble distinguishing who was talking. These books were written to be listened too.

I picked this series up at about book 5 and it didn't take long to get me hooked. I have read many police procedural book series and this series ranks..Show More » up there with the best of them. Sometimes it's kind of hard to understand some of the futuristic technology, but what sci-fi/futuristic type novel isn't nowadays? It is full of Nora Roberts' trademark steamy romance scenes and humor, but that only adds to the drama and intrigue of this series. Eve Dallas and her partner Roarke make an excellent pair in solving the many mysterious and action-packed cases they encounter. There is also lots of memorable characters as well. I never miss a book. There is not a bad book in this series. I say sit back, relax, and enjoy one of the best narrators in the business take you through a police adventure that will have you wanting more once it ends. And there are a lot of books to enjoy in this series. Read them all. You will not be able to get enough!!!

She has made each character a special personality. It's almost as if I have never read these books before. I'm enjoying Peabody and MacNabb tremendously. I actually laugh out loud at some of the conversations between them as well as some of Eve's comments. This is a terrific mystery series. There is 'edge of your seat' murder plots mixed with family humor and wonderful guest characters. I eagerly look forward to the next in the series.

What I particularly liked about "Promises" is how Eve has accepted of who she has become in life and does not harp on her past as a child. I'll admit, I was becoming tired of that. I do have to recommend to new readers to this series to start from the beginning because if you read this series out of order you will be a little disconnected with the characters and references of past cases. This book in particular. So enjoy, you will not be disappointed ... I "PROMISE".

It amazes me that this author has managed to write 30+ installments in this series without compromising the quality and integrity of its characters or storyline (take note, Janet Evanovich!) If you are already a fan, you wont' be disappointed. If you are new to the series, I recommend starting at the beginning with "Naked in Death" and enjoying the ride!

By the way, Susan Ericksen IS the voice of Eve Dallas. She, too, has done a great job with narration and character distinction throughout this entire series.

With most series, it doesn't affect the enjoyment of the books much if you read them in order or not. With the In Death series, it does. Although you ..Show More »certainly can read any book as a stand-alone, you usually get more out of any specific book if you've read several of the previous books in the series. More than most, this series intertwines and builds in significant ways over the course of the books.

For this book, I'd suggest reading "New York to Dallas" at the very least -- or that book won't be as enjoyable if you read it later. (Possibly also Reunion in Death first, before New York to Dallas, but before you read Reunion . . . ). I strongly recommend reading this series in order. Most books are great and even the few that fall a bit short of the normal standard of excellence invariably advance character development.

Ericksen is amazing as the narrator of this series. More than 15 often-recurring characters (plus another set of occasional ones) are clearly delineated. I am constantly astounded at how I can recognize which character is speaking within one or two words. The consistency across this volume of books is incredible. I don't know what salary you're making, Susan, but you're worth it. Ask for a raise!
