If you've read my reviews, you know I love some of the Forgotten Realms audiobooks, such as the Dragonlance and Drizzt series. I was holding onnto ho..Show More »pe that the Elminster series would be part of what Amazon would bring to the table for Audible's listeners. Finally, they have done so, and it's well worth the wait.
I read the Elminster novels many years ago, when they first hit the shelves. Ed Greenwood is a prolific writer with an excellent style, and I absorbed each of his Elminster novels, soaking in the superb storytelling strengths this author brings to the table.
Every aspect of this novel and the subsequent novels in the first and additional series are exceptional listening. Wonderful broad plot strokes, deep story lines and character development.
Once again, no spoilers at all. It would only ruin the listening journey.
If you like high magic fantasy, this makes for an exciting listen. And as to the rest of the series, Greenwood does't disappoint. I love this series so much, i bought them all.
You owe it to yourself to listen to this, the very first in the series.
I think John Pruden is one of the best narrators for Forgotten Realms. He slow diliberate approach sounds really good. Especially, coming from heari..Show More »ng his Erevis Cale work. I willing seek out his and Bevine's work.
I love all of the Drizzt, Brimstone angels, Sembia, Sundering series and also the previous books in the Elminster series. The storyline was absoluley..Show More » horrid. It is about Elminster geting caught in hell and a devil trying to extract a spell from Elminsters memories. Elminster trys to distract the devil by projecting useless memories from his past so he doesn't give the spell . Every 5 minutes the devil exlaims stop wasting my time with useless memories! I felt like I was wasting my time listening to small boring incohesive irrelevant snippets of Elminsters memories. Every memoire has a different set of charachters so its like listening to 50 short stories that are bland and dont really connect. Perhaps the stories will make sense in future books, but this was a horrid listen. The reader is great as always, but due the content of this book I have to give it 1 star.
About 2/3rds of the book plays out like the game of clue. While this banter back and forth between mages is fun... it can be hard to remember who is ..Show More »who and where they came from. Many people seem to be murdered by others and you really can't keep it straight!
